Shounen, Writing, & Characters Female Characters

Tom - our resident geek - loves watching shounen. However, he has recently noticed a strange pattern in the biggest shounen shows. Anime has little problem portraying women equal in strength and skill to men. Or at least, this is the case in theory. Strangely, despite having the power and proficiency, it is rare to see female characters sharing the same narrative importance as the males. Often they are sidelined, isolated, or even in need of rescue, even when this defies logical storytelling.
