Spirit uses three high energy semi-nuclear reactors to generate power. With each being the average size of a basketball, one of these generators can produce 5250 watts ( 35 amps, 150 volts). Since spirit uses very little power, they can last for about a year without any sort of maintenance. Their glowing appearance comes from the neon-like byproduct made by the reactions. The 24 coils inside each reactor create the rotary-electrical energy needed to engage the 600 catalyst reactions per second needed to generate adequate power. Unlike most nuclear reactors, these do not use the heat to produce steam and run generators. Spirit is powered by the highly controlled flow of radiation created by each of the three generators that hover around his tail. This, in turn, saves space that would otherwise be taken up by boilers and electric generators.
