"Because You Must Live": The Story of Shlomo (Solly) Perel

Shlomo Perel was born to in Germany in 1925 to a Jewish family. In 1936, his family moved to Lodz, Poland. Following the outbreak of World War II, Shlomo and his brother fled eastwards to the territories of the Soviet Union. Shlomo was taken into a children's home in Grodno, escaping following the German invasion in 1941. He was captured, and then assumed an identity as an ethnic German. Shlomo was drafted to the German military as a translator, and later sent to a Hitler Youth camp in Germany. After liberation, he reunited with his brother who had survived Dachau, immigrated to Israel, and took part in Israel's War of Independence. Shlomo married Dora and they have children and grandchildren.

  • I am Bulgarian and I am proud that we did not allow the deportation of the Bulgarian Jews to the German concentration camps. Thus the Jews were saved. Glory to the Jewish people!

    I am Muslim but I strongly against any type of religion to discriminate against any others. We can live peacefully with each other even we don’t know what others believe in. Peace to all human beings.

    I watched his biography movie of Europa Europa portrayed by Marco Hofschneider and I admire his wit and courage. RIP Solly Perel. 🙏

  • I saw his autobiographical film Europa, Europa as a teenager and always thought about the choices he made and what I would've done in his place to survive. A brave and courageous man.

    I went to school not farfrom Peine, his birthplace, we had friends there, never knew about his origin. Watched hitlerjunge Salomon in 1990 in Munich, city of Hitlers movement. Very moving contribution, thanks and regards from Berlin!
