Dates Trees grow very well here in Oman ( middle east ) and they don't need much care just give them water twice a week. thank you for your great video.
  • Elche in Spain, has the largest Date Palm grove in Europe. It was planted by the Phoenicians well over 2000 years ago. A must visit.

Love to see that place. I've heard about it from 3 or 4 people over the past 20 years.
  • @qqeqqqoiqqqd
Please update videos of your trees I’m so excited to see how big they are now year 2021
  • @braintnt
you need to plan for the future canopy of date trees so you need to space them apart at least 15 feet.
  • Hey Jake, love your passion for growing! I grow date palms for a living and would like to make a couple of suggestions. First, do not back fill your planting hole with all those amendments. Use native soil only for your back fill. I grow organically and use lots of mulch, as you do. but organic mater (mulch, potting soil, store bought soil, and so on) in the hole actually can create several problems. First, it contributes to stem rot at the place where the offshoot was cut. It can also sour if it gets a little too wet (and since date palm LOVE water you want the soil on the wet side) Also as organic mater decays, the little bit of soil that is left settles and it changes the planting depth. Also as organic mater decomposes it can leave pockets of air where the new roots can not get to the soil. So, back fill with native mineral soil only. Put all those good amendments and mulch on top of the soil. The nutrients and other benefits will soak in with water and time. on top the soil is where it will do the most good. One more trick, since air pockets are the #1 reason for offshoots dying, try this trick. Make a basin around the palm and flood it. Then use a stick or shovel and to turn the fill soil to a mud slurry. Plunge it in and out like you were churning butter in an old fashion butter churn, in and out kind of fast. As you work the slurry, you will see air bubbles rise from the around the offshoot. You will probably be surprised just how much air comes out! This gives you great soil contact with the root zone. one last note, the China Ranch folks are GREAT PEOPLE, just like you!

I just got back from the middle east and brought back a pack of these delicious dates and am going to test my luck growing the seeds in SoCal, I hope they will root

Living in Vegas I was always looking for something I could possibly plant outside from my indoor garden that can tolerate the Vegas sun, wow the date palm is perfect! 🏜
  • I visited the Sphinx Date Ranch in (Scottsdale?) Arizona back in the late 90's or 2000, and had some of their Grade A King Mejool Dates. One of the best food experiences of my life. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
  • @jednoducha
I see that the soil at your home is fantastically black under the mulch. Date seeds have a germination period of 2000 years. I really liked that the palm trees were soaked in water before planting. That's exactly how it's done. I also saw the farm. Thank you.
  • @alanOHALAN
Oh my god Jake! I first found you by looking for Yue Fei, and two year later i found you again by looking for planting date tree! I couldn't believe it is you again! From Kung Fu to dates, how serendipitous!!
  • That’s amazing I love the story about how they got started with the box of dates, I’m gonna try that with my seeds I didn’t know that they could actually be planted.
  • @irenabrzoska
I love dates and I always have them in my pantry.. your video gave me very valuableinformation...I hope I can grow date tree in my own garden.
  • My home is in Florida and I love Dates very much but it cannot grow them because of our climate, it's too humid and I live in a Tropical zone but it's great for our Coconut Palms which requires plenty of water, humidity And Sun. Unfortunately it will not survive in the desert.
  • @corymcleod2728
Awesome video Jake and thank you very much. I purchased 4.5 acres in Huachuca Arizona, about a 15 minute drive from Tombstone, I've been watching you and GYG closely to learn what I can grow in my new climate. Huachuca doesn't get near as hot and has more monsoon rains because of the elevation and the Huachuca mountains. Huachuca in Apache means (Thunder). I'm currently living in San Diego and moving March 2017 to AZ with my lovely Chinese wife, recently retired and looking forward to my freedom in AZ. Thank you for your wonderful videos and knowledge, we look forward to meeting you in the future. Cory McLeod

I was in LV a month ago, tons of fruit wasted and even thrown away. Majority of people don't even know about it. We love dates, nutrition rich and wonderful flavor.

The crowns have a radius spread of about 12 feet. So you should space them at least 20 feet apart or the leaves will hit each other and look messy.
