Classical Oil Painting Demonstration in Real Time / Landscape Part 3 (Modeling)

Published 2018-12-13
This is part 3 of my 5"x7" landscape painting demo. The previous layer was done a week prior and now the surface is dry to the touch. This stage of the process is referred to as "first painting" - a layer of paint all about modeling detail, which is an evolution from the block-in that describes shapes and colors more specific to the construction of elements in the scene. The goal of the first painting stage is to establish form, structure, and value without rendering fine details.

This video demonstration features commentary. The footage is edited to remove brush cleaning breaks I took along the way. Nearly every brush stroke is included for those who wish to follow the whole process.

  • *David Brancato So very generous of you to share so much with your viewers - in terms of your time, energy and resources. You are such a patient and willing teacher! Being a painter myself (watercolor), I watched your every brushstroke and listened to your explanations for why you did something or the other. It was such a treat. Thank you for letting us in on your thought process as an artist and sharing with us your knowledge!
  • Hi David, watched this series all the way through, disappointed to find the rest of it missing though. What happened to the second painting and detail painting?

this never works for me, like when you are putting that dark tree on top of the mountain, min 1:12:44, whenever i do this it picks up the colour behind it and become a mess, not a thin dark line like you did.
