The competition for the "fast food restaurants" is not other fast food restaurants, it is the consumer deciding that fast food is no longer fast, and no longer cheap, and figuring out that $20 spent (wisely) at a grocery store will get you enough food for several meals.

The cost of our mortgage didn’t go up, but property tax, and home insurance has. Home heating fuel and electric went up, car insurance went up. The cost of gasoline, food, soaps, and cleaning products went up. Wages remained flat. Therefore, to pay for these things, we are not buying clothes or shoes, or frivolous things these stores sell. And no more vacations, Christmas or Birthday cards, and no more parties. Gifts are things people NEED, and/or might be secondhand. I can’t afford to shop at stores or get take-out. Who still can?
