Measuring & eradicating childhood poverty in Australia | Greg Jericho ABC News

Published 2024-06-27
One in six Australian children live in poverty, yet there is no official poverty line or monitoring of poverty in place.

Greg Jericho spoke to ABC News about the need to commit to reducing poverty in Australia.

Australia Institute research suggests developing a measure which is regularly reported and that is comparable with other OECD nations.

3 million people living under the poverty
  • How rich and empty a country must be to eradicate poverty in capitalism? Not even Australia can do it. Not even for its children.

Poverty of Health Capacity is the real element of Poverty Line. As we learnt thru covid - Public Health(Hospitals) exacerbated the poverty oh health capacity , by no capacity to deal with a pandemic, no capacity to deal with 'Health' capacity in terms of Poverty of Food, Housing, Transport(public), Accessibility to Isolation areas, Natural Air ventilation in buildings(Aged Care/Hospitals), and limited support measures for those caught in Chronic Health Capacity Poverty - that still as I are caught in this 'Trap' of poverty. ACOSS and UNSW study report needs extending to include - Isolated communities Poverty of Health Capacity - exacerbated by Poverty - of exclusions to basic care, open air design, sufficient house space and accessibility, towards Wellbeing Officers on call. Poverty is not only as we see in cities, but regionally 'isolation' - as isolation is a level of Poverty Line - in terms of services and community Wellbeing. Clearly needs stronger measurements other than 'financial' based poverty.

But ALP's Bob Hawke said in 230June 1987, "no 1990 no child will live in property" And Albo said in his 2022 victory speech, "a better future for all Australians" ...... yet here we are, both of these ALP PM's backed it in with a recession and hardship with people far worse off and kids still in poverty..... full of crap lot eh. The poverty line is set with wages, fancy getting paid the adult minimum wage of $882.80 gross (perhaps $790 in hand) and not being able to afford a permanent tent site in a caravan park, WOW! Haven't we come a long way. Anyone on a minimum wage is living in poverty. Poverty is a person unable to afford being housed, fed, educated and health cared for. The public school system and Medicare cover for the last two but the housing and food alone is pretty much a basic minimum wage gone with no clothing, entertainment, car etc etc
  • hopefully next year when inflation is under control they can raise all centerlink payments by $200

No where in our human ancestry before have we spent more as a society on the older generations than we do on the young. Basic evolution and the continuation of our species (and all other species) rely on investing resources on the future - full stop. If physical and mental investment to have young is low then we have an explosion of young and the reverse if the physical and mental investment is too high then we have a significant reduction of births. Current society has its head in the clouds if they think the last hundred years of government model of investment and policy for the rich was not going to impact fertility rates. Yes people are living longer but to what end?

How can people earning enough in just one year to buy a house for a poor family think of such trivial things?
