I'm a high school teacher in the south and this is all pretty true. The valedictorians' families are typically the quietest, and the kids who barely pass have the loudest parents. Also, airhorns. So.many.airhorns.

I was so jealous of the kids with loud families cheering. I wasn’t too popular and my family didn’t attend, it felt so silent and mortifying getting my diploma.

The "boooo, we fought for you!" followed by the "baby, you come live with us, boo" and "That's right little white baby!" Never fails to make me smile, because it was so much fun watching my nephew recently graduate and hearing the enthusiasm in the crowd was so delightful.

My son graduates from Universiry of Penn next yr. I’m a single parent . His father died when he was 5. You bet your ass I’m screaming & yelling when he gets his diploma. It will be 1 of the proudest days of my life!!
