Was The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King As Good As I Remember?

I played my fair share of movie tie in games as a kid. Whether it be Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Ghost-rider, Hulk, Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, King Kong, Aladdin, Madagascar, Shrek 2 I mean the list seriously goes on and on. None of these games quite had a grip on my childhood though like The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. It was a game that had no right being that good... or at least that's what I think. Nostalgia will get you from time to time so, let's just double check and see if Return of the King really is as good as I remember!

  • yep the mid 2000's were so sick. Spiderman, star wars, the lord of the rings etc etc. I'm trying to put nostalgia aside but really I think it was a great time for these kinds of massive franchises back then.

YES! This and the Two Towers game! My dad and I played these two games so much on the PS2. I'd kill for a remaster or remake.
  • I loved the bonus features with the cast. The video where Merry's actor is making fun of Pippin's actor for sucking at video games made me laugh as a kid

I wish we had more games like this in the modern day. Being able to sit down with friends and play through a campaign together side by side was something I experienced back in the day with this game and Halo 1 & 2, and wish remained popular. It was especially fun in this game because you got to choose between all these great characters. Gimli and his axe parry are insanely good in this game btw.
  • Also loved the co-op. This was probably the best game for my brother and I to play together as kids.

I think the best part of the Return of the King game was the fact that they added a split-screen coop. Man that was such a fun experience

I loved this one, the battles really felt like you were in a war. Kinda reminded me of like a Tolkien Dynasty Warriors and really enjoyed the differences between the way characters fought. Good game memories LOL

I remember playing this game before the extended edition of the movie came out. And I was so confused because some parts of the game weren't from the theatrical movie... Like parts during the Army of the Dead section and fighting the Mouth of Sauron. I figured they were made up just for the game. Had no clue they were from the movie but were just cut out for the theatrical release.

This game had sick multiplayer. My cousin and I put lots of hours into this!

One of the best movie tie in games Just so authentic to it and love the cutscene gameplay transitions as the plot gets expanded, added so much to it Final fight is great, shame his copy crapped on him

This game was fire. One of my favorites growing up. I played this a lot with my dad, sister and friends as much as I played it solo.
  • Still one of my favorite couch coop games of all time, and Aragorn's light-heavy-light-light combo is one of the absolute coolest-looking moves in any video game, period.
  • This game will always hold a special place in my heart. My cousin used to come over on holidays and we played through the entire game together slowly over many Thanksgivings and Christmas' . We had divided the characters between us based on our favorites. I played Aragorn for like half the game and struggled with later when I switched to Gimli so we played earlier levels again so I could catch my Gimli up in level.
  • The game really didn’t need to be this good tho. The scope of the levels are very impressive for the time. Gg jimmy love the throwback videos

I remember those 2 games very fondly. They had same screen co-op, I think! I miss them. Kept waiting for backwards compatibility for these and Battle for Middle earth 2, but alas the rights are apparently all wrapped up.

Man I loved these old LOTR games, this was my childhood. I just remember getting wrecked by the king of the dead for hours. And there was one game I've never been able to remember, it was a turn based strategy LOTR game, very much like final fantasy games. I've never been able to remember which it was but I have such fond memories of that one. If anyone knows it please let me know

I remember The Lord of the Rings games well, they were so good for the time. I honestly just find myself playing all the classic games I used to play as a kid these days. That's why I'm really happy PlayStation started the whole PS Premium thing, because they're putting a lot of classic games on there and I'm loving it lol. I played Toy Story 2 recently and am playing through Jak and Daxter atm.
  • I had ROTK for the GameCube. Loved it. One of my all-time favorite games. The Fellowship of the Ring game wasn't licensed for or based on the movie. It was based directly on the Tolkien novel. Had nothing to do with the movie series games.
  • There was something special about early 2000’s movie tie-in games. So many great meteorites playing The Two Towers and this one.
