Senegal's Bassirou Diomaye Faye: Africa's Youngest Elected President | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Senegal went to polls on Sunday. The winner seems to be Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He was the candidate backed by popular opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Faye is a former tax inspector turned politician. He spent the last few years as Sonko's right hand man. He was also in prison up till 12 days ago. He was arrested last year after Senegal's ruling party cracked down on the opposition. Sonko was also arrested and barred from contesting in the presidential election. So he put up Faye as his proxy. Faye says he is happy to be Sonko's proxy. Faye is set to become Africa's youngest ever elected President.

Congratulations to the Senegalese people. Congratulations to Sonko. Congratulations to President-elect Faye. I visited Dakar in December 2022 and fell in love with the country and its people. I felt the passion for Africa and the yearning for Change through the tour guides who were so knowledgeable about history and culture. Whether by force as in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, or by determined, hard-fought electoral process as in Senegal, Change has finally come to Africa. Wish I was young again to march with you into the promising, bright future that awaits Africa.

  • Sometimes , it surprises me that elders whether politicians or pastors and chiefs or kings find it difficult to relinquish leadership to the young. Senegal is a shining example
