WTF is a Filibuster? And Should We…Nuke It? | The Couch Report

One of the most important rules governing American life isn’t a law, or a Constitutional amendment. It’s a wonky little parliamentary procedure called the filibuster. And it’s one of Washington’s favorite ways to turn campaign promises into broken dreams.

Democrats are mulling plans to reform the filibuster and maybe even someday kill it altogether — which would make big changes very possible. Maybe even too possible.

VICE News’s Greg Walters explains… from his couch.

It's not just forcing them to talk, it's forcing them to take a position. What I'm tired of is no one taking accountability for a NO

I honestly need to become a senator because they don't do sh!t but get rich.

"The legislative filibuster is the most important distinction between the Senate and the House. Without the 60-vote threshold for legislation, the Senate becomes a majoritarian institution, just like the House. No senator would like to see that happen. So let's find a way to further protect the 60-vote rule for legislation." Said by current Democratic leader, Senator Chuck Schumer April 2017.

Americas politics is just trench warfare at this point. The only solution is introduction to a multi party system as seen in europe, but republicans and democrats dont want to be first sharing voters resulting in a landslide for the other party. I cant think of a realistic way to solve this problem and that sucks

The filibuster must stay as a defense against single party rule. We need to find compromise any one party being able to pass bills along just because they have just over half the seats isn't compromise.

Bring it back. Lol, I would love to see someone talk for 12hrs about why people don’t need healthcare.

Electing the most qualified officials is the best way to counter Filibuster
  • Those are absolutely necessary to prevent paperclipping You can't dump a 500plus page bill the night before a vote and be all this is it. Take it from a Canadian. Absolutely necessary.

Yeah let's get rid of one of the most important check and balance of our constitution. It's supposed to be hard to "get stuff done". Government constantly passes laws that are filled with corrupt handouts, secret agendas, and poison pills. What's wrong with a majority of senators having to sign off on a bill? What's wrong with having MORE time and MORE debate and MORE input from constituents?

Polling officials can give you water, or your friend, a delivery driver, someone else in line......just not political activists
