Lyrics:
The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I bowed my head and I cried

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me to love another
You have shattered all of my dreams

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
Please don't take my sunshine away

The Dead South brilliantly demonstrate how dark and foreboding this song actually is. Love it.

The countless hours that my wife sang this song to our crying baby, only deepens the impact of this cover. Good job Gentlemen.
  • Me and my father enjoy your music. He died last Friday and I want you to know how special was your band for us. Thanks
  • Would somebody please explain to me why I'm utterly captivated, completely disarmed and uncompromisingly in love with this group? It's the first morning coffee to my ears, the most lucid philosophy to my sensibilities and a joy to my soul. Go figure.

Was driving with my dad with this song on and a fire raging in the distance. The sun slid down, staining the smoke red and purple, as we harmonized. A haunting memory that I won't forget for a long, long time.

So few people notice how dark and threatening the lyrics are. The Dead South knocks it out of the park with this minor key version. Nailed it.
  • @beriukay
Everybody's talking about the haunting melody, so I'll just add that the camera work was fantastic! If it wasn't shot all in one take, the seams were extremely well hidden!

boy oh boy lebonbon where do I even start? Ever since you graced the nba court in 2003 I knew you were special. with every bucket you score you become even more of the goat and there is not a day where I dont thank god for your greatness

The Dead South is my sunshine, please don't ever take my sunshine away.

Finally, a true rendition of the meaning of the song, and so insanely beautiful and haunting.
  • Just brilliant. . The original song was done in major chords whereas the DS plays it in A minor. This is a Depression era song. It's also a Prison song about a guy in stir only having this memory of this woman to keep him going. He has nothing but this memory and a Dear John letter would leave him with nothing. The use of the Cello is brilliant in enveloping us with the feeling of terrible sadness and loneliness. Thanks guys. Stay safe
  • The Dead South had me with "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company", and continue to blow me away. This version of this song is amazing. I play it ALL THE TIME.
  • I Love The Dead South. The Voices, the sound, their Style. It's perfect. And I like the guys, very friendly. 👍

I am so glad that Danny Kenyon is back. This is and will always be the best lineup of The Dead South.
  • In 1938, my grandfather proposed to his first wife by singing this song to her while she was out in a field in rural Arkansas picking peas. Upon hearing about this, all his friends laughed at him & asked him why he'd buy the cow when he could get the milk for free. He married her anyway. They moved to Los Angeles. Fast forward 5 years. When he returned home from fighting in WWII, she answered the door, 8 months pregnant & speechless (what could she say?) A man walked up behind her & asked, "Can I help you?" Without missing a beat, my grandfather said, "I'm her husband & I'm just here to pick up my things." The man opened the door for him, he went inside & gathered his belongings, & before he left he shook the man's hand & told him, "good luck." Then he walked away. True story. Her name was Ruthie.

My wife used to sing this to me whenever we'd watch the sunset from my parents porch as teens. Now my skies are grey and I'm singing it to myself
