Five women who say they were denied abortions in Texas, US, despite facing life-threatening health risks, have sued the state over its abortion ban.

Texas bars abortions, except for medical emergencies, with doctors facing up to 99 years in jail for violations.

The lawsuit claims that many doctors are refusing the procedure even in extreme cases, for fear of prosecution.

One of the five women, Amanda Zurawski speaks to the BBC’s Christian Fraser about the emotional pain she faced when seeking an abortion following life-threatening complications with her pregnancy.

"Doctor was permitted to give me healthcare." What is the point of doctors if they have to be PERMITTED to do what they learned and know to be needed? Shame

My wife had an abortion because our baby was diagnosed with a severe skeletal dysplasia on the 21 week ultrasound. She had a severely small rib cage, undeveloped lungs and would have suffocated to death if carried to term. The abortion had to be approved by the hospitals ethics committee. All late abortions are done for dire reasons. We don’t need more laws regulating this.
  • These barbaric laws are targeting young American women of child bearing age. The state of Texas is practicing medicine without a license, which Is illegal and amoral. Also, targeting and discrimination against women and denying life saving health care is unconstitutional and a violation of human rights. Thank you for your intelligent and compassionate reporting. If women in the US are being denied modern comprehensive and life saving maternal and reproductive health care, they are citizens without full rights and this is taxation without representation. This is worse than pre Roe days 50 years ago.
  • This is why politics shouldn't interfere in Healthcare, leave medicine to qualified medical professionals.

This woman was punished for being a woman. It is absolutely sickening!
  • @K3r0411
They are punishing the families who actually want children. I would prevent getting pregnant in the US at all costs.

I cant imagine being in this womans situation, it must be extremely infuriating that you have to wait until the brink of death to receive what should be basic and necessary care

Time for folks to seriously start thinking about leaving the US..... Come to Canada, where women's health care... is their own to manage.
  • To be 100% clear, she will also have been charged by the hospital for treating her ‘avoidable’ sepsis. Wouldn’t want a hospital executive to miss out on optional extras for his Mercedes’ car, would we? 😮😮😮
  • These laws in the USA are draconian and absolutely irrational . I pity american women and pharmacies that dont sell pills should be boycotted
  • Watching Amanda speaking the horrendous facts of her situation whilst doing her best to maintain her composure is such an unfair situation that her society has put herself in. It’s clear that she’s not completely come to terms with mind blowing insanity of her trauma, and that she has not finished grieving. Not cracking whilst on camera for the BBC must have been one of the most courageous and difficult things she’s ever had to do. I just want to give this woman a hug; it wouldn’t bring back her daughter but at least she’d know people recognised her suffering. F___ the republicans. How dare they author such pain.

Get those criminal politicians and judges out of power and stop them harming so many innocent lives. They should be locked up, not in office.

This what happens when evangelicals make laws
  • I’m from Spain in Europe. If the US continues in this path , a country we used to admire , it will become completely barbaric , backward in every sense . As a woman , I’m glad to live else where, mind you, I had the opportunity to live in Austin, but preferred to stay in my own country, for personal reasons, even though at the time it was a wonderful place.. It’s Depressing to think civil rights , so hardly fought , have been lost..and need to be recovered.I am sad for people will suffer, not only women, men also, they also have wife’s , daughters sisters girlfriends ,or simply want to leave in a modern society , with basic human rights. Let me tell you TO all those that do not approve of the right to have an abortion. First of all its not compulsory, Second and embrión it’s not a baby until it’s born, whether you like it or not. Third , To have a baby in non suitable conditions, with no support in anyway just because you are obliged, that’s when real cruelty starts on the life’s of the baby and the mother.. Fourth , A question for you . Are you or that government , going to support economically and in every aspect the basics of an upbringing? Or that’s when you end your ideals? Leaving the baby , and mother in utter poverty and misery , in many cases, ..good job! Because once it’s born and it’s a baby , then ,there something really important, the upbringing of a human being, something which you do not care on the least.OBVIOUSLY. Fourth , you are the living hypocrisy, for the same reason , you could not approve certain scientific studies(mother cells) but you do ! because you need them for your own personal health issues. Sixth , all the obvious medical reasons , when the pregnancy can become fatal for the mother and embryo..like an ectopic pregnancy. All The reasons why this women have sued that government.Something which in your views does not seemed to be even considered. And finally , this is personal. No one has an abortion “for pleasure or contraception” ITS traumatic. And if you lot , had a full filed life , you would not need to impose on others your fundamentalist ideas and your backward understanding of religious thought , you ..fanatic freaks.

This is just wrong. Cannot imagine how she managed to recover from this experience.

What a brave woman. I hope that you are able to have a family because you will be an amazing mother.
