It's "a very different approach" because they were goofing on Top of the Pops for making them fake-play their instruments, while having Kurt on a live mic to an instrumental track. Basically saying, "f you, you don't want us to play our instruments live, so we're just gonna f--- around and make this whole performance ridiculous." It's yet another reason that this band's sense of humor made them one of the best ever.

I love the camera cutting to Kurt's impressive guitar solos only to find a mannequin-like hand mimicking the action. Kurt was a master of subverting expectations. He will be missed. 🙏
