many patients have insomnia or can't sleep before surgery, it's quite common before the surgery and anesthesia. many patients wonder if that changes how much anesthesia they need for surgery if they're already half asleep! while it varies, typically, the less sleep a patient has had before surgery, the less anesthesia that they need. in fact, nighttime surgeries may need even less anesthesia!

  • I snored through my last surgery. The surgeon made it a point to tell me it was a first for him.
  • Your premise may be true, but good restorative sleep is healthier and may make the post operative course smoother. I think we’d like to encourage healthy habits prior to surgery, which is a stressful event.
  • I’ve heard that sleep deprivation prior to surgery raises the chance of higher post surgical delirium and pain levels.

I think for most people it's difficult to get a good night sleep when you're nervous about a surgery.

My last surgery was planned for 12:30. Surgeons weren't ready so I popped on my headphones, played a remix on repeat and woke up 2 hours later while being wheeled into the operation room :D No stress, no anxiety. Would recommend.
  • I had been up in excruciating pain for 38 hours until they finally put me in surgery, I explain to them my liver condition. Of course they didn’t believe me, but they were pretty surprised when I open my eyes real wide when I woke up in the middle of the surgery. Doesn’t matter how tired I was my liver still going to kick everything out of my body so fast and I can’t explain that any further because no one wants to believe it until it happens then they believe it.
  • I am grateful for anesthesiologists. They prevented my labor cramps

I always wake up feeling like I just had the best nap EVER, and I struggle to fall asleep the night after surgery. I feel all hyped up.

Remember, your paying for the knowledge to wake you up, not the medicine that puts you to sleep

i’m terrified of being paralyzed but conscious and feeling it during surgery

This guy is the type of doctor I hope I get when I go into the ER.

I don't have a choice, I'm always too nervous to sleep. I have a major surgery in a couple weeks and am still having trouble.
  • As a person who's had many surgeries unfortunately, this is so true. I stay up all night with anxiety and then when it's time to put me under I don't even make it to 5 before I'm knocked the hell out lol Then when I wake up I feel like a brand new person that could fight Superman 😂😂

I found this channel right after I had surgery 2 weeks ago. Its a really stressful and scary experience but I am glad there are anesthesiologists out there that really care about what they do. These videos have made me feel less anxiety about the entire process, even Post-op. 😊

Your whole demeanor is relaxing, man. If I was scared about to go under, I would want a dude like you in charge.

I never sleep the night prior before going under and always wake up from surgery like I had a year's worth of sleep. So refreshed and ready for Starbucks lol. Weird, but I look forward to it when I know I'm gonna have surgery.
  • Easier said than done Doc, especially when one is anxious as hell the day(s) before! Guess you better break out the tranquilizer gun for me.. lol 😂
  • @anxiety1050
I have a little tradition of staying up all night before my spine surgeries and listening to music and writing. Its like a last little moment with coherent before I'll be knocked out on drugs for 3 weeks
