We continue our adventures in Basilan with Erwan Heussaff and explore the majestic beaches and meet the most generous locals on the island. We learned about artisans who are masters of their craft—from boatmaking, to cooking handmade delicacies like “Patulakan” and freshly made Yakan specialties like “Jah” and “Panyam.” This is an epic food trip that will surely make you book that flight!

This is the second installment out of our two-part travel guide to Basilan that hopefully shines a light on how Basilan is trying to leave the shadows of the past behind as they share a glimpse of their own version of paradise.

I've noticed that Erwann has been giving great representation of our dear Muslim brothers and sisters in his channel. My roots is from Northern Mindanao but I'm now a citizen in Canada. Living in Canada has changed my point of view with different cultures as it's a country known for cultural diversity. Thanks Erwan, this will definitely changed stereotypes and perspective. Your wife and Dahlia must be very proud of you. 😊

This video brings me goosebumps! Born in Basilan but Igorot by blood. Erwan mentioned "from the Cordilleras to Basilan". That's just me. That's just amazing!
  • Department of Tourism sleeping on Erwan for long time. This is the kind of tourism promotion Philippines should have.

For someone that haven't been home in the Philippines for the past 8 years, thank you for always showing us these parts of Motherland that we weren't able to reach. Always great content FEATR!

Great content. Hindi lang talaga Luzon ang Pilipinas. Visayas and Mindanao are equally blessed, we just have to connect the islands more.

Great video Erwan! Basilan is an amazing place, I visited this february as a solo backpacker traveling through less known areas in the Philippines. Apparently I was there a few days before you and your crew, which is quite funny as you were the one who made me want to fly to the Philippines and explore the food and culture in the first place! 😏 A truly spectacular place! However I did run into quite some difficulties, and I think this important to mention. I believe Basilan is perfectly safe and to deny that is quite ridiculous based on real world data as you mentioned in the section at Malamawi beach. I wasn’t allowed to buy a ferry ticket in Zamboanga, had to be profile checked at the coast guard like some criminal, then told I need a contact in Basilan, which I obviously didn’t have but made some connections in Zamboanga which led me to a friendly lady who agreed to host me. After arriving in Isabela I was made to think that I would stop by the tourism office and visit the mayor, which was requested of me and then I would be able to check out the island a bit (in the company of my minder, as it was unthinkable to let me walk around Basilan alone 🙄😬) I found this truly ridiculous, yes I saw the beauty of Basilan, met friendly people, but spent most of my time in various offices taking selfies and getting shuttled everywhere by a car and guards with assault rifles. I have visited well over a 100 countries and this was definitely the most over the top measures I have seen. It is great that a lot of people like you and Kulas are giving voice to the inhabitants and the beauty of this region of the Philippines because they and their culture truly deserve it. But at the same time I think it is important to shed light onto this negative side. All the people at city council keep saying how safe it is and how they appreciate my effort of flying from Europe to the the Sulu archipelago with my own eyes and not trust the media. At the same time I am restricted in movement and not left alone at all. In the end a truly bittersweet trip. The officials should get their stuff together, Either we want tourism as we say and promote by actually letting people come, or we don’t. I hope they choose the former and communicate things better because the people truly deserve it and the potential is amazing in Basilan island and all around the Sulu archipelago I am sure 😏🤩🇵🇭 I thought I had to mention this 😌 Thanks Erwan and the FEATR crew for an amazing video once again and I am here still supporting you guys 💪🏻😏 Sending my regards from Europe to you and the great people of Basilan 🤲🏻😎🇵🇭🌏 But man I am craving a cassava puto right now 😬🤭
  • @angelbaby1923
Congratulations Erwan for winning the James Beard Broadcast Award🎉❤! And thank you for visiting my homeland❤.
  • @shepz03
Again, as a Pinoy, thank you Erwan and FEATR for opening our eyes to these beautiful glimpses into our own culture that we would be oblivious to, if not for you guys.
  • @chimchiminpark9578
What I love Erwann is how you can see his sincerity to explore different cultures. He look so humble. ❤
  • @franzmanlutac
FEATR has grown so much! Compared to previous videos, I appreciate the balance in narration and storytelling between Erwan giving his commentaries and the locals of Basilan actually speaking about their food themselves. There’s a great sense of empowerment in doing that. Keep up the good work! :)
