Dude I swear the roll delay is absolutely disgusting

The subreddit is telling me it's not a thing. It ABSOLUTELY is.
  • finally someone with a brain has noticed. Not the only problem in the game but definitely the one keeping me from enjoying it.

Seams to occur most against bosses. Same with the lag

Because the roll triggers when the button is released, It feels like the roll button gets hung up on whether it’s supposed to sprint or roll. Edit: …and it still hasn’t stopped me from putting 160+ hours in to the game. Haha

yeah this is my first souls game so i was actually fucking shocked when i noticed the delay and that its actually intended, im used to shooters so im more of a reaction type player and that game really punished me especially with the switching between fast and slow boss animations, these mfs literally sometimes do like 4 swings in a second followed by a really slow last hit which is completely off their timing, its pretty fun when u get used to it though but id still prefer realtime feedback

It never felt this noticeable in DS3, and I beat it a day or two before Elden Ring came out. Both on PS5. Feels like you have to do more memorization and guessing than relying on reflexes alone. Honestly, I have had better mileage spam-buffering back to back rolls during fast enemy strings, for minimal vulnerability frames (a holdover from Dark Souls), instead of actually reacting to each swing. You'll still get hit, but probably less often, and you start with a lot of endurance anyway so it's not the end of the world. Made some of Margit's ridiculous strings less punishing. I've experienced other issues too, like weird audio compression and crackling, and random deaths from getting stuck on objects (like, literally floating in place). Some things might be my setup, or lack of skills; I'm not certain. But the game is clearly not perfect, so I'm hoping they fix some of these issues in patches. All told, the game has been bugging me. Which is unfortunate, because I like the map and monsters and so on.

Still having this problem and got used to it, but it still needs to be fixed. I really wonder why Elden Ring has this problem, but all the other soulsborne games don't. Even if the dodge is delayed a tiny bit, it can mean a lot consider bosses in this game have faint attacks, crazy chain attacks, and really fast ones that require a fast reaction. For example, the crucible knight's tail attack, I would have to predict and roll BEFORE he did the attack so that I could dodge it, otherwise I would get hit
  • If you are on PC then try playing in Borderless. That fixed the delay for me. If on console then I am sorry until From Software patches the bug.
  • @Bloodxyco
In the game where all the skill comes from dodging at the right time, you put in a fucking delay on that due to making it on release not on press? wtf?????? I cant even fathom the stupidity here.
  • @nebky
First roll you were out of stamina, you can see it recharge up to the point that you have enough for a roll before the roll kicks in. The rest you were mid spellcasting or stunned... Not saying the issue doesn't exist but this isn't a very compelling example.

Welp, I really just hope that this input lag is not a real intended feature. Because damn bro... Damn... Still enjoying the game tho. I'll just try not to remind myself of this input lag, as well as those sites of grace where the interaction point if off by a few feet from the actual sites of grace lmao. Really hope this all gets looked onto and patched. (Playing on console btw)
  • There is probably a delay, but when I look at the animation, it seems to be a bit floaty? This happens to me when I play Injustice 2; however, I will be playing a 1080p 60 fps video on the side. Try Elden Ring in offline mode on a different save and see if there is a difference, or make sure you have no additional applications operating in the background while playing. I'm not sure if this is a bug, but that's silly.

Its a souls feature for your game to dodge on the release of a key, or an action executes when you RELEASE a key. Which imo, is dumb. If they take out the delay, it'd be a much easier game I'd bet. So you get input lag + intentional delay, since pressing a key and then releasing it also causes delays.
  • @RWBYfreak
I think the delay happens because a roll occurs when you let go of the button not when you press it

I play on PS5 and this is driving me nuts. The game is out for two weeks now and they still didn't fix it? And it is NOT for the reason that the button is also assigned to sprinting because it has ALWAYS been like that in From Software games. After 2,000 hours of Soulsborne games RIP muscle memory. I just don't get it.

just happened to me on melania , she was the air clearly winding up to one shot me, i pressed roll seconds before she got to me and i just stood there like a doghnut and absorbed it to my face.. like ok no bother i wont roll then ill just re do a boss due to a mechanic fault sweeeeeet ...
  • @ThatTacoKid
We'll if you'd quit casting 2 feet from a giant monster I think you'd be fine. Also casters bad 😁
  • @kevboard
it's literally the exact same delay as Dark Souls 3. you only start the roll after letting go of the button btw. people actually measured it. and the difference between this roll and the Dark Souls 3 roll is maybe 10 to 15 milliseconds, something noone would actually notice
