180 Days of Spelling and Word Study: Grade 5, Unit 26 (Derivational Suffix: ERY)

Published 2024-02-24
This week's focus is multisyllabic words that end with ERY. Words that end with ERY (ex: cutlery, pottery) are usually nouns. A few words that end with ERY (ex: every, slippery) can be used as adjectives. Many words can be changed from a verb to a noun by adding the ERY suffix (ex: bake/bakery, nurse/nursery). Several verbs that end with ER can be changed to a noun by simply adding Y (ex: deliver/delivery, flatter/flattery). Students are reminded that base words must drop their silent E before adding a vowel suffix (ex: forge/forgery). They are introduced to the Latin roots TECT and COVER as well.
