I love the "Ave Maria" and I've always really liked Perry Como for his singing and for his spiritual nature. When I was a little girl, I remember him singing this song or usually, "The Our Father," at the end of his TV shows. Can you imagine these songs being sung on TV today at the end of a program? It was another time and another world.

Perry Como had the longest stay of any popular artist with RCA records, 1943-88 and sold over 50 million records. You can purchase some of his music online.

Perry was born in 1912 in Pennsylvania, the 7th of 13 children (the 7th son of a 7th son). He sang and also did some acting. He sang for over six decades. He was known for his calm, humble nature. Mr. Como was married for 65 years to his wife, Roselle and they had three children. It's said, he was never quite the same after she passed on. He died in 2001, a few days short of his birthday. He was a barber turned singer and weren't we lucky to have him!

The "Ave Maria" is the Catholic prayer, "Hail Mary." Translation below:

Latin Text
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

English Translation
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Happy Birthday to my mother in heaven

  • Possibly the best song ever recorded. I never get tired of hearing it. Other singers tried singing this song, but nobody does it like Perry Como
  • My Father introduced me to this beautiful song. It was my Grandmother's favorite. Now mine. ❤🙏

The camp I worked at as a counselor during teen summers played this every night for lights out and every morning. It echoed through the North Carolina forest and was quiet mystical and magical. Thank you Perry!

Makes a person feel very sad and humble.... but also grateful. How does anyone speak ill of the Mother of God? And I don't see how anyone could give us a better song of this than Perry Como. He was truly a wonderful human being.
