My thoughts on TikTok

  • my biggest issue with tiktok is the authoritative tone that a lot of people use on it, even if they're blatantly wrong or spreading misinfo. I don't use the app myself but it's super obvious to me when people use it as their primary social media. my only issue with the bill proposed is that it uses very vague language (so for instance a us site had once hosted itself temporarily in russia, would they be bannable?), this ban should apply only to large websites over a certain threshold of daily/monthly active users.

A lot of the frustration I've been seeing is that the US government is so slow to act on anything really meaningful but acted extremely rapidly with an almost unanimous decision to legislate tiktok. I'm worried about the potential of a precedent that may be set with this decision, that a kind of mccarthyism might emerge from it, through which non-chinese and non-russian applications and websites are suppressed or banned just because it is suggested they might be influenced by china or russia. The CCP is incredibly scary, and limiting their reach is an important step, but I've learned not to trust that any decision the US government comes to is wholly in the interest of its citizens or that there isn't some form of gain to be made in wealth or power by the people in the government. Fuck tiktok, I'm just trying to own a damn house in this fucking economy.

I agree with what you said but man I'm going to miss this app. Tiktok really is a great platform for artists, musicians and any kind of creative that wants to promote their work. I also feel like it's more personable than a lot of apps. Maybe it's just my feed but I notice people are much more open and vulnerable about their lives and aren't concerned with following societal norms. It's helped me feel less alone with some of my own struggles. Other platforms don't have that quality and if they do most of them are relentlessly mocked in the comments. But for real I think tiktok has damaged my ability to focus drastically and I am really concerned about it's effect on kids.

Honestly, any move that forces people to develop longer attention spans isn't necessarily a bad one. Oh, and as an addendum, the trick to "dismantling systems" successfully is having the replacement either laid down or ready to go. That's how any political movement succeeds: by actually following through on what it promised, for good or for ill.

Wake up in the morning time to cheeck the feed.
Grab my new phone, I'm on the platform, I'm gonna check my ratings. (lets go!)

    Don't stop, make it pop
    DJ, blow my speakers up
    Tonight, I'ma fight

Yes tik tok is crazy! I won't let my kids have it.

It's a source of news and entertainment that isn't completely controlled by the people that want to control all of the information. The Tiktok Bill is ambiguous enough that it leaves a huge opening for expansion to other platforms.

I never had tik tok and I prohibit myself from ever downloading it. But I did get a taste of the shorts here on yt. To be honest, some shorts are funny and I caught myself several times scrolling through. But I also came across so many short snippets of people saying things, out of context usually, with countless of shorts and once you came across these clips, the algo feeds you more and more of those. Its how I came across Andrew Tate, like most people probably. Tik tok also allows stealing content. I can take yt videos, cut them to a short tik tok the way I want them to be, and upload them. Good like trying to get me. Tik tok is not doing much to chase content violators down. Most of the time, people need to lawyer up to get tik tok to act. In Europe, we heard about the US thinking about banning the app. Here they mostly try to limit the personal data violations. They're not really talking about bans yet. What is terrible though, is that yt has gone down this shorts rabbit hole as well. The algo quit pushing regular videos as much, and promotes these stupid shorts, basically spitting in the face of actual content creators.

TikTok is scary man. It’s kind of frightening how HUGE it is with young people my age (I’m 21). There is also barely any substance or organization to how you view things, judging from the short time that I’ve used it. All you do is doom-scroll. At least with Reddit or Twitter or other platforms you can join “communities” and talk about specific stuff. On TikTok you just scroll until you get your dopamine and move on. Very bad for the brain! SAD!!

Now, there is a lot of cool and funny stuff on TikTok but the platform seemed to sort of come out of nowhere. I liked Vine but it’s somehow worse. Crazy how it got so many YOUNG kids blindly hooked on it.

I just find it interesting that people are defending TikTok by calling it a "free speech" platform when half the people who came to YouTube from TikTok did so because they were banned for what they said or out of fear of being banned. I mean if you are running to YouTube to avoid censorship, maybe the platform you left is the problem.

Fully agree. Love your content as always. Ever thought of doing a podcast?

But isn't Twitter just doing the same thing now? just the opposite? Just look at what Elon Musk Signal boosts, like Antisemitic stuff, JQ-posters and the like. Seems to me like the exact same criticisms you have of TikTok can be applied to Twitter.
