In this video you can see my progress in making my own 3d Zoetrope.
If you like it, I'd appreciate you to let me know by liking, commenting & subscribing. Have a good day!

A zoetrope is a device that creates an illusion of movement. In this case it is a disk with figurines on it that spins. While spun, a stroboscope only makes the figures visible when they are at the right spot, making it look like the models don't spin but move on the spot. I made this project with a 3d printer, the Blender Software and then doodled some stuff because I didn't have enough footage lmao

You could do it with slits, too, right? That would seem to eliminate 90% of the problems with motors and lights.

Algorithm brought me here in Oct. 2023, glad to see you have 215 more subscribers. This was great! Subscribed

The Ghibli museum in Japan has a fantastic one that is highly detailed and intricate. One of the "tricks" is actually to place the models farther apart, so the viewer doesn't get distracted with seeing so many of the same models moving around. You really only need the animation at around 10 to 15 fps to see the nice effects.

Thanks for the 3D Printing tip for less stringing. 👍😎

You could put a tube inside of the ring of cubes so the viewer is only able to see the cubes in the front... then the animation will be a little more focused. Also, an animation without jumping (so the support on the cubes in mid-air is not needed) would add to the realism. FYI - Blue Man Group uses a strobe and a large spinning set of sculptures for an animation in their show.

This is really quality for 15 subscribers and 246 views. You deserve so many more! Also, I want to give this a try with my resin printer now.

Wow! Love the dedication to the craft and the limited budget approach... 😎👍🏼 Instant sub here
  • Great video! Small suggestion though: you should add "Flashing Lights" disclaimers (like at 2:20) for people that may affect! I guess the entire video probably deserves a warning ha
  • 3:30 the camera freaking out isn’t because of the app, it’s actually not freaking out at all. The issue is any camera you get, unless specifically made and labeled otherwise, uses rolling shutter to take picture or record video. it doesn’t take an instant snap, but records each frame scrolling from top to bottom. usually not something you’re able to notice, but for things like flashing that changes in the middle of each frame being recorded, it mucks it up pretty bad. to avoid this, you have to get a camera with global shutter, they’re typically much bigger and more expensive

2:24 You can also use same thing you did to 2d images. Also a few months ago in Gemini Center in Bielsko Biała in Poland was that thing with somewho running and jumping the obstacles and a flying parrot.

Great stuff! That's how I salvage parts from PCs too!
  • @polypro553
Dude, this is going to hit the algorithm, this is really high quality! Keep this up and you might be able to make a living!
  • @roTechnic
Wow, this is awesome! Please make more videos!
  • @h6502
making those supports white or clear might improve things a little
  • @zecuse
A slit would still help sell the illusion so you're not always seeing all of the other frames all the time. Add a column in the middle of the rotating platform to block the back portion as well.

I love the part where you said its geometry dashin time and geometry dashed all over the place 👌

Everyone who enjoyed this should look up George Pal and Puppetoons. I like this video and your sense of humor. Thanks.

Amazing job. I've seen other projects online as well. I was thinkimg, maybe you could achieve the perfects stroboscope at any speed, if you could create little connectors at the centre of each figure, so when it rotates light can hit always at the perfect timing at whatever speed. Best regards from Portugal
