How to Get Into Doom | BangerTV

Published 2021-05-11
Let's be honest, Metal isn't the most straightforward world to dive into.
In each episode of How to get Into, Blayne Smith will break down a main genre of metal, providing historical context and the hallmark sounds that define the style while providing some great bands to ease yourself into the waters. On this weeks episode, we'll look at how to get into Doom and who knows? Maybe you'll discover your new favorite band along the way.

I think a stoner/doom album that gets people into Metal in general is Electric Wizard- Dopethrone, I know a lot of indie rockers who don’t even listen to metal but fuckin love that album
  • @petertyson2
Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema were my gateway in to most things Doom.

In reference to Solitude by Candlemass, “...that might have come across as silly and dated.” Meanwhile, I’ve been introducing everyone I know to doom metal using this specific song. I don’t regret my decision.

Doom is easily my favourite metal genre. Slow, hard, and deep; just the way I like it

The band that got me into doom, even though they’re not a doom band, is Alice In Chains. They were the first band I heard that emphasized the slow and heavy.

Crowbar, Down, Fu Manchu, Clutch, Nebula, Elder, Monster Magnet, Spiritual Beggars, Orange Goblin, YOB, Eyehategod; Black Cobra, Sheavy, Goatsnake, Pallbearer, Sun and Sail Club, Corrosion of Conformity, ASG..... it’s all good Baby!

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality. Half of these genres are on that one album, if in embryonic form.

If they do not lower me to my grave with Candlemass epicly blasting through the entire town then I don't wanna die

Personally, I think Eyehategod would've been a better mention for Sludge, the first three albums are what Morbid Angel and Darkthrone is to death metal and black metal respectively, The Unholy Trinity of Sludge Metal.
  • Sleep , Monolord, Windhand = the trifecta of Great Modern Doom REPEAT> Sleep, Monolord, Windhand & YOB

The enthusiasm Blayne introduced Wormphlegm by saying "if were gonna get weird, LET'S GET WEIRD" was positively endearing. That's why I love his videos! The band that got me into doom was definitely Candlemass. Their first two records just blew my mind as budding metalhead. I was probably 19ish when I first heard them.

Thank goodness Neurosis got mentioned! The GOAT.
  • @ursus9982
You didn’t mention Death/Doom and somehow made it through a video without mentioning Hooded Menace
  • Sabbath...then Trouble...then Witchfinder General...then Cathedral...
  • @jordanaut
Definitely needed the addition of Death/Doom and Gothic Doom. Needed to mention Electric Wizard, Crowbar and of course Paradise Lost, Katatonia, My Dying Bride and Anathema too. I would’ve also added the band Funeral when talking about Funeral Doom. But of course this is just a short video so you can’t cover everything

Eyehategod or Crowbar!!!! Nola native here showing some love.
  • @tuliocosta3973
Listen to Reverend Bizarre, people. The Hour of Death is a great track to start, you'll get everything great you need in your doom.
  • @sourcedecay
I grew up where Sleep and Neurosis are from and was a gothy teenager at the time, so yeah, that's how I got into it. You couldn't walk for more than 5 minutes downtown without stumbling into a Neurosis show.

Pallbearer is one of my absolute favorite doom bands! Also worth checking are Conan and Primitive Man who create some badass sludge and doom.
