Russian military uniforms reveal inequality between forces

Published 2024-04-15
The Kyiv Independent’s Alexander Khrebet and Oleksandr Karasiov from the Ukrainian military and tactical clothing brand, M-TAC, examine several samples of Russian military uniforms. Samples of uniforms were passed to us by the Ukrainian soldiers from the Territorial Defense Forces and Special Operations Forces. The uniforms were worn by Russian infantry and reconnaissance troops in Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts.

  • As a former American soldier, I really appreciated this quick look into some of the issues with the uniforms. The unclosable fly definitely gave me a laugh.

I hope prooduction is back up soon, at least a seamstress can worlk from home and doesn't need a factory, provided the materials can be sourced.

Thank you for this interesting video and for highlighting the plight of Ukrainian industry in the face of russian missile attacks. That’s why Ukraine really needs more air defense now, and I hope G7 countries, most especially USA, will deliver ASAP.

  • The types of uniforms for combat issued to the Russians indicate the quality of combat clothing issued to their basic infantrymen. This is also valuable intelligence to how fast they are issuing uniforms to replacement troops being sent to the front for combat meaning that brand new uniforms being issued to new troops who are becoming casualties indicating that less veteran soldiers are in the Russian Army ranks. This can be deceiving because the veteran soldiers would take the new uniforms off the replacements. In all it means that the Russian Army are issuing more uniforms of lesser quality to their soldiers because they become casualties more quickly meaning they have less training as they are feed into the existing assault units only to be killed in combat very quick. Uniforms left behind by dead soldiers who never came back from combat are recycled to the few veterans who managed to survive combat for now.

The first batches of the Ratnik digiflora uniforms did not use IR stable dyes either. If was not long before they discovered soldiers glowing in the dark when viewed with night vision equipment. They rectified this but I would bet there is still a lot of that in circulation. There is a fair chance that the laundry is not done with the right detergents too and that degrades IR stability.

I saw a Russian version of this critiquing the Ukranian uniforms. Good to know both armies uniforms are terrible

I didn't realize that Ukraine is fighting in the fashion space too, maybe his buttons and velcros gives they a so desperate victory that they are seeking. To be fair, they are avoiding comparing their shovels to the Russian ones, IDK why…
