Layering coloured pencil using complementary colours.

Published 2024-05-12
I drew these bananas using complementary colour underpainting techniques(using coloured pencil), this way I was able to establish a great starting point to achieve correct tonal values and create a balanced image.

Please leave a message in the comments if you like this technique!!

I used the following material to create the drawing:

Faber-Castell Polychromos 107, 111, 138, 170, 194, 219, 249, 280

Holbein 476 sea fog

Paper: Saunders Waterford hp watercolour paper

This was brilliant. A bit of a light bulb moment for me! I like the the second one best. It looks more natural.
  • My stars! What talent….I’m soooooooo light years away from this kind of skill….anyway, got to start somewhere. Thanks so much for sharing, much appreciated! ❤❤❤

I’ve never heard of this technique before - it sounds most unlikely but what an astonishing result! Definitely one to try. Thank you for this great video. Your drawing skills are excellent, too. Those bananas are good enough to eat!
  • I love the results. I do have to say the first pair of bananas look more appetizing. Both have a realistic almost photographic look.

How did you determine which complementary colors to use? A video about using color theory to get the result desired would be super helpful.
