The Contrarians: AC/DC Album Wars

Published 2024-07-06
We discuss and contrast Highway to Hell and Back in Black!

The Contrarians is a show where one of us jumps in the hot seat picks a dark horse album from a band as that band's best album. The guest host will argue against them with facts, stats and all around truth, subjective and objective!

  • I would take any Bon album over any Brian album. I own their entire discography and love most of them but the Bon albums are easily my favorites in their catalog. 🤘🎸
  • @drewrose374
Highway To Hell for me by a hair, my favorite AC/DC album is Let there be Rock.
  • @martymartin2894
One other very important factor to acdc success and these two albums in particular is the magnificent production sound from mutt lange. These might be the best sounding albums ever ive heard and those about to rock. The drum sounds are fantastic and huge.

I’ll have to be contrarian to the panel, respectfully, and pick Back in Black as my favorite. I was in junior high school when it came out and I recall my friend had it on 8-track. We used to listen to it, outside, on his boom box where you put the cartridge into the side of the machine! We all dug the album and it was our entry into the hard rock/heavy metal realm. AC/DC just happened to hit the zeitgeist with Back in Black; sometimes you just can’t explain exactly how or why these things occur. It’s probably an odd combination of their songs, look, Mutt’s production, their timing and luck. I still love every song although the big single is absolutely an overplayed li’l ditty by now. Cool show, lads. Parish, enjoy the show! Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! Your pal and mine, ~ The Devilish 😈 Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

they became a stadium rock act/sound from back in black onwards, before that they had been playing lots of uk tours in 2/3 thousand seat venues,no big bell, cannons, just a straight ahead, raw set,i was lucky enough to see them twice with bon in theatre venues,ac/dc are better in a smaller venue than a stadium
  • @martymartin2894
As much as i love bon scott, back in black is their masterpiece in my opinion and i fully believe that bon had the lyrics to most of it already written, its evident by listening to it, and listening to the drop in quality that followed.
  • Both 10 out of 10 albums, I should go with BIB as it's the album that got me into hard rock/heavy metal but I enjoy HTH more.
  • @user-fs5eh7mt3e
As far as drumming tempo was better with Bon, they had Phil Rudd from the worldwide High Voltage through Bon’s death. Brian Johnson had Phil Rudd from BIB through Flick and then again in 95 to the present. Brian had two different drummers in between.
  • @Kyush4
I prefer bon but i also think if you compare powerage to highway to hell, mutt lange should be condemned for terrorism
  • Two of my favorite ACDC songs are not even on a studio album....Who Made Who, and Big Gun.
  • @user-vz3bg2vy3w
For me on Back in Black I always have skipped Let Me Put My Love Into You , where I never skip any song on Highway to Hell. In general I like the songs from Highway better .so Highway wins it for me.
  • @ericdinse5047
No doubt these are both classics but, I've got to go with "Highway..."
  • @howie5th
This is a really good match. I was a junior in high school when Back in Black came out. It was a monster. Both albums are great, however, Highway to Hell is the album I listen to on a more regular basis. At this point, Highway is the clear winner for me.
  • @rumblehat4357
MTV started in 1981. Plenty of bands since the 1960s made “videos” to promote their songs. MTV simply put it all in one place for viewing.
  • @lance98541
Being Australian I grew up with AC/DC in the 70s, they even played at my high school in 1975 but when Bon died, so did AC/DC for me. It took me a long time to accept AC/DC without Bon and by the time that happened their albums were far from great anyway.
  • @patriotpizzaman
Highway over Back in Black all day! Beatin' Around the Bush!!!
  • @thomashubner697
Let me think about it. As a young kid in 1979 i did absolutely hate Bon Scotts voice. When Back in black came out I liked it and the vocals are phenomanal. How is it now? There are very few Bon Scott songs I can listen to. Jailbreak, Go down, Sin city, Shot down in flames. When it comes to the Johnson years it is more. Have 3 Cds. Back in black and Power up are two very good albums. The third is by far their very best killer album. Flick of the switch. Bought it when it came out and went to the tour. Saw them on Fly on the wall and Blow up the video. So for a short time I liked the band. Spin Flick .. at least five or six times every year and Back in black and Power up at least 2-3 times. Other than that I am no AC/DC fan. General listener.Like your videos!
