There are over thirty films in Toho's long-running franchise. That can be a little intimidating at first glance. But hopefully this will make things a little easier for those looking to give the King of the Monsters a chance. Barring the original film and its American reedit, here are my thoughts on five of the best Godzilla films and why they standout from the rest.

Really respect your picks on this list. Godzilla vs. Hedorah is too frowned upon and sends a crucial, urgent and dark message to the human race just like the original film. It's easily the best of the 70's showa films apart from the original Mechagodzilla films. Invasion of Astro Monster is also one of my favorite showa films. I prefer it over its predecessor and own a VHS from Blockbuster that I rented a couple times when I was a kid. It was one of my first Showa films to experience and holds a special place in my heart. Best of Toho's Ghidorah.
  • I agree, the original GMK monsters choice would of been a lot better than what they went with, it’s kinda weird seeing Ghidora being a good guy, it doesn’t fit him very well

I think Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla could be ranked amongst these, due to it's compelling characters and drama. And Godzilla 84, because of it's dark serious tone, scary take on Godzilla, production value, and having symbolism of the cold war, therefore giving it some substance
  • 10: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 9: Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster 8: Godzilla vs. Biollante 7: Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster 6: King Kong vs. Godzilla 5: Godzilla vs. Destroyah 4: Godzilla vs. Mothra 3: Godzilla (2014) 2: Shin Godzilla 1: Godzilla (1954)
  • I have a completely different top 5 list, though I agree that GMK, Shin Godzilla, and Mothra vs. Godzilla are very good. I used to really like Invasion of Astro-Monster but now its a but lower on my list (it used to be in my top 10, now its just in the middle) due to the extremely slow pacing. 5. Gojira 4. Godzilla vs. Biollante 3. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah 2. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah 1. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
  • I agree with your choices 100%. You can watch Godzilla movies for different genres. Comedy, horror, action, war. One of my guilty pleasures is Godzilla vs Megalon for the tag-team fun.

I actually thought terror of mecha Godzilla is very underrated. It has a compelling human story with some tragic character drama along with having some great kaiju action. Titanosaurus is also a sympathetic monster.

Love it! Great insight into the Godzilla series! I'd love to see you post more often! :)

The biggest failings I think with GMK was the studio interfering way too much and the strict schedule and budgetary measures on the film. If Kaneki was given the same liberty as he had with Gamera, allowed a longer production cycle and free reigns to do as he wished, the movie might have been better than the gamera trilogy.

i’ve always been one of those guys that was a huge fan of Hedorah for a lot of reasons you stated. I got hate for it but i like the weirdness of the film. my personal top 5 is Gojira(for obvious reasons) 2000(for an oddly enjoyable cast, human rivalry, a buildup to a monster since it was a rock for a majority of the movie that was approached how i feel people would approach something from outer space) Destoroyah: It felt like an amazing end to an era. It feels as if it’s a movie that will end a franchise and it leaves you sad by the death and end of godzilla. The ties to the original movie while being a clear sequel to the past heisei films Mothra 1964: You honestly got everything right about how good mothra vs godzilla was. It is my ideal suit for the entire showa series. To me it should be the defining movie of the showa series (because 1954 was too serious to be a franchise theme). GMK: Amazing fights, compelling story, fantastic designs for every single monster in the film. Effects are great, the origin for godzilla is unique and gives him more personality than he was having in 2000 and Megaguirus.

The only reason I'm still a G-fan is because of these great and worthwhile films. My top 2 are Shin and The Planet Eater. Monster action just doesn't satisfy me if the reasons for it are contrived. Great video!
  • I understand the choice to analyze movies for their qualities as movies in general, but I think godzilla should not be forgotten, it's his film after all. The best godzilla movie would be the one that balances godzilla, the message it presents, the cinematography and of course the action. For example, even though I find that shin godzilla is a very good movie, the monster in itself is my least favorite incarnation of the charachter, I think it looks more like destroyah than godzilla, it will be better in a godzilla animates. 13:19 Sorry but the best-looking godzilla movie remains godzilla 2014 which I find still beyond shin by its staging and its special effects.
  • GMK, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Tokyo SOS are among my favorites. The Millenium monster designs are great; the fights well staged; and the cast, stories, and themes engaging. A bit disappointed they used Baragon instead of Anguirus in GMK.

It is high art, you don't judge a play because it doesn't have special effects. You may have to use a little imagination in certain areas. Godzilla movies did have good special effects. So good hollywood stole them. Of course there was sometimes the unconvincing toy car on the miniture set that made you remember it was a guy in rubber suit. But still fun.

Great list! Sadly i still haven't seen Shin Godzilla yet. My personal favorite is Godzilla vs Destroyah. That may be mostly due to nostalgia though. I need to revisit the film some time.
  • Nice list! My top 5 would be 1954, Gmk, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs Destroyah and Biollante.

I enjoyed both of the Kiryu movies(Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS). I loved Kiryu’s design out of the other versions of Mechagodzilla, and I especially love the concept of using the skeleton of the original as the framework. You can view it as Japan using the ultimate embodiment of their fears (the original Godzilla) and turn it into a weapon and symbol of good (kiryu) despite the risk of the uncontrollable power within it (whenever kiryu goes berserk).
