Arn Anderson never says anything negative about people. So when Arn complained on the podcast... I knew Buzz must be pretty bad for Arn to complain.

So I just had an idea for a Netflix Series. Jim plays a wrestling promotor from the 1970s who runs a southern territory but as “Mainstream Wrestling” reaches its peak, the territories begin to fade. My thought is that it could actually be set in the 70s OR it could be set now in which he plays a former wrestling promotor who the “mainstream wrestling” ran out of business and now he finds himself trying to open an independent promotion but being that “Rasslin” guy its harder & harder to adjust. I see the humor kinda being like The Office,Cornette ranting and screaming at wrestlers about how great the past was. This would be a funny series

“Why are you hitting me with that racket?!” “That’s a receipt, Buzz.”

Buzz Sawyer and Dick Slater as babyfaces? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that.
  • Buzz Sawyer did have a pretty damn good career for being as short as it was. The Georgia territory was where ge achieved the majority of his success. He was part of the original Legion of Doom stable for a short time. He had an epic feud with Tommy Rich that has reached infamous levels. He had an underrated feud with Roddy Piper as well, that involved Piper putting on one of the most slept on, yet great promos ever (it's on youtube and it could not be done today). Sawyer had a really good run, in Mid-South Wrestling as well. I also thought his WCW run was extremely underrated as well. It wasn't just him in WCW that I thought was underrated but the entire stable and angle he was involved in there. J-Tex Corporation was great. You have Gart Hart managing (i know it was not his best work....but it's still Gary Hart), then you have Terry Funk, Great Muta, Buzz Sawyer, Dick Slater & The Dragonmaster (Kendo Nagasaki...not the World of sport version...he was a great trainer who was one of Stu Hart's top trainers in "The Dungeon"). How can you hate on any stable that features that lineup? He may have been a dick in real life, but he was a very good heel and could put on a good match, and he was believable as the "Mad Dog". Another promising performer that had his run and life cut short by drugs.

Too bad they didn't bring up how he screwed Undertaker and Magnum TA. They hired the dude to train them, but he wound up taking their money.

Buzz Sawyer Death On February 7, 1992, Buzz Sawyer died from heart failure due to a drug overdose. He was 32 years old and living in Sacramento at the time.

What you may not realize is that Buzz, Bruce Woyan was his real name, was not scared of anything and loved to cause havoc in real life. Almost suicidal in a way. I did his graphic design for his school and he paid me. He never stiffed me but would stiff anybody he thought might protest just so he could kick the shit out of them. His wife was incredibly beautiful and devoted. Even so, he made the wrong people angry and his early demise was not a surprise. Towards the end before I moved to SF from Sacramento he did kind of turned on me but I stood up for myself and stuck my finger in his chest 5 or 6 times really hard(do not anger me) and he looked at me and said some clever veiled threat I can’t remember. Next time I saw him he stuck his four fingers into my abdomen really quick but friendly as I was speaking to his wife. It was an acknowledgement that he respected me for standing up for myself. After a few years I realize that he was a good dude but he hated cowards and loved to fuck with someone who bullied people. RIP Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer.

Unadilla, GA is not a suburb of Atlanta. It's 120 miles from Atlanta; actually closer to Macon.
  • buzz and wildfire was the rivalry that drew me into wrestling...as a kid growing up on long Island, we got cable in 1981...so any days I wasnt outside playing( kids actually played outside in those days) I was watching Mtv and tbs...watching Gordon solie interview buzz sawyer reeled me in...then Tommy wildfire rich sealed the deal. he was the perfect baby face and buzz the perfect heel. Those old shows from the omni in Atlanta were classic...rassling was amazing in those days.....even as a 7 year old I knew buzz was legit crazy.
  • Jim. The rodeo arena in Unadilla is still there. It is actually a suburb of Macon, Ga. The only thing that has changed in Unadilla is the calendar. LOL.

Saw the Midnights with Bob Roop against Buzz and Bret Wayne Sawyer and Slater in August 1985 in Marietta, Georgia (Roop was pinned, which kept the Midnights strong). The Midnights, Corny and Roop got their heat back by attacking the faces after the match, bloodying one of them ( I think Bret).

christ the 80s territory days was an absolute madhouse sitcom
  • These are great, but I'm really hoping you and Jim review matches together as the viewer watches. Those things are phenomenal. I just watched an episode of JCP World Championship Wrestling (June 29, 1985) where Manny Fernandez gets visibly frustrated with a job guy attempting clumsy comebacks. It reminded me of the Ko Ko Ware/"Patriot" match.

Unadilla Ga is south of Macon, not an Atlanta suburb, but it does have that rodeo arena right off exit 121

I remember the time Buzz Sawyer was wrestling on TV. I believe it was in Georgia at the time. He injured his wrist during the match. He bent it backwards in an inhuman way almost. He held his wrist, finished the match and went to the back.

I remember Undertaker and Stone Cold talking about how awful Buzz Sawyer was as a human being.
