Greek history

Greece's history is very rich and complex, from ancient times to modern times.

Minoan civilization
The Greek Minoan civilization was an ancient Bronze Age civilization that developed primarily on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea. The name comes from the legendary King of Crete, Minos, and is used by modern scholars to refer to this ancient society. This civilization generally flourished from about 3650 BC to about 1400 BC, with a peak between 2000 and 1600 BC.

The Minoan civilization is known for the sudden emergence of a vast maritime trade network, complex multi-tiered palace economy, use of the symbolic 'Linear A' writing system, and highly developed art and architectural techniques.

Particularly famous are the grand palaces of Knossos, Phaistos, and Malia, of which the Knossos Palace is the most famous. This palace has a complex structure, which is so similar to a labyrinth that it is believed to have inspired the legend of King Minos and the Minotaur.

It is said that the religion of the Minoans was mainly centered around nature worship and female gods. Since many goddess statues and religious ceremonies are associated with women, it is assumed that women's status was relatively high.

The Minoan civilization's sudden decline is thought to be due to several reasons, including explosive volcanic activity on Crete, natural disasters, attacks by foreign invaders, or internal socioeconomic changes. Around 1400 BC, the Minoan civilization gradually disappeared due to the Mycenaean civilization.

The discovery and study of this civilization was greatly advanced by British archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 20th century. Evans contributed to publicizing the existence of the Minoan civilization through his excavations in Crete. His research and excavations have led to major advances in our understanding of this ancient civilization.

mycenaean civilization
The Mycenaean civilization was a civilization in ancient Greece that flourished from approximately 1600 BC to 1100 BC. This period is often classified as the 'Helladic' period and corresponds to the Late Copper Stone Age. The Mycenaean civilization takes its name from one of its major cities, Mycenae, located in what is now the Peloponnese.

The Mycenaean civilization is known for its advanced bronze technology, complex palace-centered political structure, and powerful military power. The Mycenaean civilization is also the setting for many stories from Homer's epics 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey', which relate to the famous Trojan War.

Structurally, the Mycenaeans protected their city with massive 'cyclopian' walls, which were believed to have been built by the giant Cyclops due to their size and weight. Representative buildings include the 'Tholos' Tomb, the tomb of the monarch, the 'Lion Gate', and the complex palace structure of the nobles.

In terms of social structure and culture, the Mycenaean civilization had a specific economic system and trade network that functioned based on centralized power and bureaucracy. During that period, the alphabet Linear B was used to write Mycenaean Greek, an early form of Greece.

Ultimately, although there are various theories, the Mycenaean civilization declined due to a series of changes and disasters that began in the 1200s BC. What followed was the so-called 'Dark Age', during which much knowledge and technology was lost. After this period, the classical period of ancient Greek civilization begins and new city-states are born
