What's a waldorf? A walnut that's gone off?

I was at a reception in Britain not long ago. The salads in the buffet were labelled, and wouldn’t you know it, there was Waldorf salad. I remarked, “ah look, Waldorf salad”. The British guy behind me said, “one Waldorf salad, PLEASE!” We all laughed because we knew exactly what he was referring to. Fawlty Towers is so beautifully ingrained in culture now. That’s a wonderful thing.

The guy that played Mr. Hamilton was terrific 😂👏

    “I think we’re just out of Waldorf’s.” 😂

I love how he brandishes a butter knife, lol.
  • Imagine going to a restaurant and the chef is recommending the grapefruit tonight.

I find Mr Hamilton to be an obnoxious bighead and actually feel sorry for Fawlty in this episode( well only a bit).

I almost can’t watch this . It is the strength of the writing. Mrs Richards gives him a hard time but this guy threatens Basil. Again superb acting. Cleese did some remarkable training films , I laughed my head off at some. They were brilliant. This series is an incredible collection of how to make a TV show. John Cleese is a genius in my opinion. Again I find this hard to watch seeing Basil fall apart .As with A fish Called Wanda , Cleese brings out the absolute best in Actors , Mrs Richards was brilliant. I have seen them 100’s of times, still can’t believe there were only 12.

"Could you fix me a waldorf salad." "O ea a wa?" "Waldorf salad." "I think were just out of waldorf."

God bless Mr Hamilton Not taking shit that we’re taking every day
  • Had to look up that actor Bruce Boa. One of the more memorable things I’ve ever seen from a television show. It’s musical in the sense that it provokes the inexpressible. He’s actually Canadian –
  • Can you imagine how much phlegm went into that Waldorf Salad? PS- Did you know that Cole Porter lived at the Waldorf Hotel in Manhattan for many years? Well, his piano is in the lobby, roped off of course so no one would touch it or play it. I was shooting a film there about 15 years ago and asked the hotel manager could I play Mr. Porter's piano and he said yes only because I was with the film company and that normally they did not let anyone touch it. It had not been tuned or maintained but it was still fun to play Cole Porter's piano.

0:59 "Look, I haven't paid you £20..." That was written in 1978. In today's money, that's the rough equivalent of £118. No wonder he was pissed off!

If this guy stayed at the Randolph in Oxford this is probably how he'd act too.

I see there's a lot of guff floating around about Americans abroad here--but a minute point of order, if I may: the episode was filmed a minimum of 39 years ago. Perhaps, in the ensuing (nearly) four decades, we have become a trifle more nuanced.
