Puma Deviate Nitro 2 Review: A great all-rounder with a fantastic outsole

The original Puma Deviate Nitro was a great shoe that many runners were unable to use because the heel collar rubbed and caused blisters. The Deviate Nitro 2 fixes this issue with a more padded heel collar, but Puma went well beyond that with its updates to the shoe, which include replacing the midsole material with its PEBA-based Nitro Elite foam, previously only seen on the brand’s top racing shoes.

Run Tester Nick has logged 75km in the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 to see if it can rival the best all-rounder options on the market, including the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3.

Great to see more training shoes coming out with some useful outsole tread. When it comes to racing shoes, I understand why they pare it back and optimise it strictly for pavement, but it's so frustrating to see training shoes hobbled by pointlessly slick soles.
  • You’ve got such a nice vibe man, real talent for presenting.

Have been waiting for this review. Thanks guys. 🙏🏻

After watching a lot of shoe reviews this past month, a novablast 3 with puma grip outsole would be a winner this year. 😁

Thanks for the review Nick. I used the v1 a lot, now have v2 - all round a better trainer. The change in ride I found is no lack of bounce (plenty of that!) but v2 misses that late snap off the toe that was so much fun in the v1. Maybe the softer foam up front muting the plate. Still love the new version though!
  • Great vid from my fav Run Tester! I love the v1’s bounce and still rockin them for my daily runs. Not sure about the v2 now that they updated the mid-sole with the elite foam.

Was interested in these. Thanks for the review, Nick. From a fellow Orion! 👊🏼

last summer, I did a bit of mountain trail running in the original Deviate, and i while not a trail shoe replacement, it was fun. The carbon plate is a pretty good rock plate, the grip is ok etc. It is just too unstable to push downhill in rocky terrain. I would actually not mind using it for an uphill trail race.

The Deviate Nitro V1 is one of my favorite running shoes I've ever had. It's not the best but to use Fordy's words, it's like putting on an old friend that never disappoints. I've never had the heel issue, but I'm hoping the tongue is a bit thicker because sometimes in a long run I do start to feel the laces start to apply pressure on my feet.
  • It’s alright much improved over the 1st version. Slightly narrow fit, tbh I think it’s simply like a higher stacked more cushioned version of the velocity 2. Agree with you about the ride, I was expecting more responsive midsole but still a solid training shoe

Thankfully I never had any issues with the heel in the first version, it’s still very good at 250km so probably don’t need to upgrade just yet

How on earth did Puma get it so right with just 2 versions which Nike could not in 39 versions? Good luck to the lead designer of the Peg 40. Good days for us runners.

Nice review how ist the sizing ? should i go 0,5 size bigger or the normal size ?
  • Could you compare the sizing to the Velocity Nitro 2 and the Deviate Nitro Elite? In the Velocity Nitro 2 I’m true to size but in the Deviate Nitro Elite I had to size up a half size. Does it run closer to the Velocity 2 or Elite in terms of sizing?

I think the cat had smells something bad...Joke yeah ? Already research about this shoe and its review is so very good that id like to buy one this year. Thanks for sharing your personal inputs on this shoe. 👍

Much bouncier than the speed 2 in my testing and of course the grip isn't comparable :) I've run downhill on snow and ice (!) in it and it has gripped well. Just ordered the WTR version for winter use.

Thanks for the video. I'm looking for some advice. I've been running on the cumulus 24 as my daily trainer. I use that for distances from 10k to 15k, usually at easyto medium paces.  I'm looking for a 2nd pair in my rotation with a bit more responsive ride as a daily trainer. Am heavily contemplating the deviate nitro 2. Went to test it out and it feels good but one concern that I had was that I felt my feet tilting a little inward as i land as compared to the usual flat landing that i feel with my cumulus 24. Is that feeling normal for this shoe and is it okay? A 2nd alternative im looking at is the forever run nitro.
