finally got the sub 7:10 run that i've been looking for, even if it's still far from perfect. i did this run without having my mic/facecam on, and it wasn't streamed on my main twitch channel, and i think it might've helped me play better in the first few hours of the run. i plan on doing more runs this summer, so hopefully it won't be another few months until my next world record in this category.

Please read this before asking any questions you might have about the run. Q. What does an All Moons speedrun consist of? A. An All Moons run consists of, well, getting all the moons in the game, which is equal to 880 unique moons. Q. Why is taking a break/pausing the timer allowed for a speedrun like this? A. You can certainly hold the opinion that breaks where you pause the timer shouldn't be allowed in any speedrun, but unfortunately for you it's completely allowed on the speedrun.com/ leaderboards for All Moons and 100% runs as long as the run is marked as TA. While I'd prefer for my runs to be breakless most of the time, sometimes a break can really help when I want to eat or use the restroom during the 7 hours I have to be playing, as the longest cutscenes in the game where I don't have to touch the controller are still less than a minute, and trying to eat during the mostly short cutscenes in the middle of the run sucks. Q. Aren't there 999 moons to collect? A. To get to 999 moons, you need to buy DUPLICATE moons from the shops, and duplicate moons don't count as "unique." Q. If you only need to focus on getting all the moons in the game, why did you get extra purple coins, outfits, etc? A. Any extra purple coins I got (that weren't for buying certain outfits required to go in certain rooms for a moon) are only to buy things in the purple coin shops to reach a certain number of stickers, souvenirs, and extra outfits required to get some Toadette achievement moons. Q. What is the difference between All Moons and 100%? A. In All Moons runs, you only have to focus on getting all the moons in the game (which requires a few extra purple coins/outfits/etc.) and in 100% runs you get all 880 unique moons, all costumes and hats (excluding the "special" outfits in the shop, as they are DLC from updates and the game does not count it for completion), all purple coins, all souvenirs, all stickers, all captures, and all music tracks. The time difference is around 1 hour and 15 minutes, most of that time difference is due to coin grinding in 100% for the more expensive outfits you need to buy. This is why most people do All Moons runs rather than 100%. Q. Why is the game not in English? A. The language used in this run is Simplified Chinese, which is the third to last option in the language options in the game’s settings. This is because it is the fastest language to use in this game, according to current testing. How? Anywhere where there is dialogue on screen where you scroll by it, since Simplified Chinese has the least amount of characters, it scrolls by the fastest in that language. There are also usually fewer text boxes in that dialogue compared to other languages like English, saving even more time. Q. Why did you finish off the run with going to Moon Kingdom to refight Bowser? A. For the speedrun.com/smo leaderboard rules, you end timing when you shoot out the wire at the end of the Bowser sequence in the special painting that unlocks after getting all moons in the game. Since you unlock this painting only when you get all moons, the community decided to make the run end there, instead of something like ending the time when you get the golden sail to show up on the odyssey. Q. What controller are you using? A. I’m using detached Joy-Cons for this run. Not only is it faster to use Joy-Cons for this run as there are a lot of cases in the run where it’s fast to do a downthrow, I just find playing on detached Joy-Cons more comfortable than using my Pro Controller because using motion controls on the Pro Controller isn’t as comfortable for me. Q. Why did you choose Wooded/Seaside first when first unlocking the kingdoms? A. The order that you choose kingdoms is important since the painting chain (the order of kingdoms when you go through paintings that are in most kingdoms) order depends on if you choose Lake/Wooded and Snow/Seaside first. Choosing Wooded and Seaside first presents the most optimal painting chain order for the route for multiple specific reasons, and to be honest I don't know all of them. The route was made by people that are a lot smarter than me, and they have a lot of reasoning behind some of the odd-seeming choices in the route. Q. 3:05:32 - 3:06:50 What was that? A. This is cap throw grinding/farm. You need to get to 5,000 cap throws for a Toadette achievement moon in Mushroom. Similar to coin grinding, you don't get the required amount of cap throws naturally in the game without your movement being overall slower. Because of this, you need to get some extra cap throws in there, and this is currently the fastest known way to cap throw grind. Q. Why do you sometimes cap throw a ton against the wall, or when you're waiting for something? A. This is for any section where the game has an "autoscroller" or any place where you have to wait for something to happen in the game (such as a moon spawning or during a boss fight). This is for the same Toadette achievement moon regarding 5,000 cap throws. This helps you get the maximum amount of cap throws without wasting time to cap throw farming. Q. 5:06:13 - 5:08:20, 6:09:09 - 6:11:37 What was that? A. This is jump grinding/farm. This is for the Toadette achievement moon regarding 10,000 jumps. Once again, you don't get to 10,000 jumps naturally doing this run so you need to do extra, and jumping under the Odyssey in certain kingdoms & in that table in Metro are the fastest known ways to get extra jumps in. Q. 6:44:43 - 6:47:56 Why/how is Mario invisible? A. After beating Darker Side, you unlock the invisible cap, which makes Mario invisible. Since it's slower to go into the Odyssey to change the outfit back to normal, you just play with Mario being invisible until you buy the costume in Mushroom Kingdom that's required to get a couple of moons. Q. How come you aren’t playing in 2P mode? Isn’t that faster? A. A completely 2P All Moons run actually isn’t possible. This is because collecting some moons like for Koopa Freerunning races isn’t possible as you can’t enter those races in 2P mode. Even if it was faster to enter 1P mode when you need to do Koopa Freerunning then switch back to 2P mode right after, it wouldn’t be allowed on the leaderboards since 2P mode is not allowed for any main board categories, with the exception of Any% on specifically the 2P subcategory. Q. What version of the game are you playing on? A. I’m playing on version 1.3 digital, which is the fastest version to play on for all mainboard categories. No, 1.0 isn’t faster to play on. For All Moons, in fact, it’s tens of minutes slower to play on, mostly due to difference in load times and coin duplication/Luigi coin hint arts, neither of which can be used on 1.0. Q. Where are the leaderboards for this? A. speedrun.com/smo/full_game#All_Moons Q. How do you memorize this whole run’s route? A. There’s a route doc for this run on Google Slides that has everything you need to do in order, and you can have it open during the run. However, after doing several completed runs of this, you kind of just have it memorized on your own at that point. This is the link to the route closest to what I use: docs.google.com/presentation/d/1QUlZq9NoG6wDw1e5BZ… Q. How come you didn't use a mic or facecam for this run like you usually do? A. Occasionally, I do runs either offline/not on a livestream or on an alt Twitch account, and I did the latter for this run. I do this so that I can do runs without having to use my mic or facecam and not worry about how I look or my chat messages or anything like that. I think it helps me focus a bit more on the run, but I can't tell for sure if it makes me play better in general. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer with a reply to your comment and then I might add some to this pinned FAQ.
