Hiking Black Mesa, Highest Point in Oklahoma Where You Can See 5 States at Once

Published 2024-05-17
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #795
Date of adventure: 4/13/24

I didn't know Oklahoma had a desert -- but it's beautiful, and full of dinosaur relics! And from the top of gorgeous Black Mesa, which is the state's high point, you can see at least four states -- maybe 5, depending on your eyesight.

I grew up not far from Black Mesa, spent many weekends camping at Clayton Lake. We used to hike up to the top of the mesa in the early morning, then stretch out and wait for the daily flight of a pair of F-111s that would practice their close-terrain techniques by flying only a hundred feet or so above our heads. They would be traveling so fast that you wouldn't hear them until they were right on top of you ;-). The trail you walked up is an old Jeep trail. I used to drive my ‘47 Willys Jeep up that road…very narrow 😜. I also spent a lot of time getting to know the residents there, who would show me where to find dinosaur bones/tracks, cycad fossils and petrified wood. The general store in Kenton was a cool place to visit, too :-).
  • At 3:45 . . . "Well boys there is a Hussy in town", L and O and L, I have not gotten to laugh like that in a long time! 😆😅

Sarah, I know you don't read these, but in the off chance you see this one, here it is! I swear, being 100 percent truthful here, you should be at millions of subs, and I don't get why you're not! On your own you have managed to operate what appears to me a professionally produced, and acted travel show. You should be on the Travel Channel for everyone to see. There are other media outlets people watch other than YouTube. Have you thought of contacting the Travel channel, or some other network to see if they'd be interested in buying your past episodes, for a fee of course? I just feel you deserve more success for what you've accomplished, and what you do. You could also make a concerted effort to gain more subs, advertising, meeting up more often with other channels, I'm just shocked you aren't at a minimum of a million subs for the quality work you put out, it stuns me every time I see your stats. Maybe you're satisfied with the status queue, and that's fine too, but I think you deserve more! 👍😎✌🗽
  • Oklahoma will always be special to me. When I married, our first home was in Lawton. My first son was born at Ft. SILL. It really is a beautiful state. Gas was cheap, so we would pack snacks and take road trips.

    ' we're on a road to nowhere.' Who remembers this song...wonderhussy? 😲

Hey there are very cool Wonderhuss, ya gotta remember and be prepared and carry your cool stickers to leave your mark each and every place you visit and explore! Because everybody loves the "HUSS". ❤
  • I laughed my ass off when you said "well boys, there's a hussy in town"! ....I love your sense of humor!!
  • 1st time seeing one of your Highpoint videos. Love it! On September 27, 1994 I became the 1st person to climb the Lower 48 State Highpoints SOLO ❤.
  • What a wonderful monument! I had no idea that there was granite in Oklahoma, and such beautiful red granite it is. It should last awhile. Ammo can registers are more durable than the coffee can ones.

Hello Ms. Hussy, from (mostly) flat-as-a-pancake Florida! And as you mentioned, FL’s highest point is just a shade over 300 feet (Sugarloaf “Mountain” near Clermont, FL in the middle of the state just NW of Orlando), it’s a favorite amongst cyclists - every November there is an organized bike-ride called the Horrible Hundred (100 miles max which includes this hill). Enjoy your travels! Sincerely, Florida Man 😂

I'm in SE Oklahoma, the lush green mountain area of the state. On your next trip through this area I recommend you do a video on the Heavener Ruin Stones. Fascinating history of the Vikings whom is thought to have left some ancient writings on boulders and rocks throughout this small region. Thank you for bringing attention to this little known state!

Interesting all that is in Oklahoma. I've only driven through it, only stopping for gas. My loss! Now, I'm going to have to go back and look around some more. Thank you for showing us the hidden Oklahoma! The dinosaurs went extinct some 65 million years ago.

Memories of squatting in the desert when a ground hog ran accross my feet. I spent days picking cactus needles out my butt.

When my Dad, my Brother and I hiked to the top of Mount Whitney (14,505 feet) long ago, a lady at the top said, "Boy it sure is foggy up here." To which I replied, "Lady, we're standing in the clouds!"
  • Wow I live in Oklahoma(the green part LOL ) and run back and fourth to Amarillo all the time but never ventured up there to the highest point. Thanks for sharing this, I'm definitely going to have to go check it out!
  • @wilburcase3766

Yes, we have to note Sarah's RCH reference being the smallest unit of measurement for curious viewers. Red C Hair is your starting point in solving this mystery. C U soon!
