Let It Go is the most popular disney song by far in the modern era. But why? Ten years on and it still remains to be such a hit piece.

What I find interesting about this song is how it's almost seen as something completely independent from its film. The music video can be viewed just as a short film without any further context and just be a song about empowerment. However, in the film it practically subverts that "Oh you like that Elsa feels free, well her kingdom is literally dying" showing that even happy she doesn't actually have control of her powers and ignoring her problems doesn't make them go away it just makes things worse..
  • As someone who was in 4th grade when Frozen came out, I honestly really resonated with Elsa. I was able to be friendly with my classmates and all but being by myself was honestly more enjoyable. I always seen more extroverted characaters on screen so when I saw Elsa I finally seen someone who was like me. I also looking back can also see how much pressure Elsa put on herself due to her powers. I know it's not talked about often but in the broadway version of Frozen Elsa is SHOWN to be struggling with suicidal thoughts. I honestly do prefer the broadway version because the characters have more depth. Let it go for me is really a celebration of being able to be independent.

I heard that this song was meant to be a villain song, just like Elsa was meant to be as the villain of the movie. It would have the same lyrics. But the tone and instruments would be much darker, and the way she sings would be in a sarcastic and malicious tone. But thanks to Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, they gave us what we got. That's why they chose Hans as a villain at the last minute after turning Elsa into a poor misunderstood soul. But her irresponsibility for causing Arendelle to freeze and slamming the doors in our faces is still there.

You’re absolutely correct about the visuals playing a huge part in its effectiveness. I distinctly remember when the movie first came out, one of my friends saw it first, and then she had me listen to the song (no visuals). I remember saying “it’s ok, but it’s not really that great. It doesn’t make much sense.” She replied by saying, “it makes more sense in the movie. Her voice fits the character, and it works there.”

Very interesting fact: In 2013, another song similar to the popularity and overexposure of “Let It Go” was released the same year and came from another mainstream animated film which was “Happy” by Pharrell. It’s interesting how 10 years ago we got 2 songs that would be constantly overplayed on the radio during the 2010 decade and drive people crazy and both were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. So if “Let It Go” lost, “Happy” probably would’ve won. Imagine having to choose between 2 songs that were overplayed on the radio during the year and annoyed a lot of people to give the Oscar for Best Original Song. It’s like either choosing between 2 disgusting sandwiches, one with coleslaw or one with cottage cheese.

Either you die a cinematic masterpiece or live long enough to see your movie analyzed

Anytime I rewatch frozen I realize the story is weak the character decisions are contrived and it really is the first sign of creative decay for Disney that eventually led to the landfill we are at now. Still good songs atleast

I think this song is the reason why modern Disney songs are so much worse than the old ones. They’ve just kept trying to top it, but ironically, none of the songs that have followed it have been able to stay in my brain in the same capacity, thus making them less memorable. Considering what song we’re talking about I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing 😂

This song means a lot to me as my dalmatian sang this song. The let it go part. She died in 2022. Every time I hear this song, it hits me emotionally.
  • If I want to be honest about Let It Go, I'm starting to appreciated the song the more I got older and I like the Demi Lovato version more Now it's time for Disney to create a new song that can beat Let It Go or be on the same level

In my opinion Frozen is a textbook example of the term "overrated"

Maybe for some the song is overrated, but I also don't forget that thanks to this song, they decided that Elsa would not be the villain but a more likeable character and I'm fine with it.. I loved it a lot, but as I grew up I paid more attention to the lyrics from Elsa's perspective to realize that it's not just a catchy song, but I must also say that Demi Lovato's version and the Broadway version make it deeper and not just empowering.

Let it Go was the "Hakuna Matata" of the 2010s. Heck Frozen in general was the "Lion King" of the 2010s😁

Thank God, someone else says it! The song has just been all over the place in media since the film's release! Just because what, it's message is positive? Bruh!
