I like how she gets right into the video without having a very long intro :)

I'm wondering why all these bird companies are trying to kill birds...

    1. Don't feel bad because you have any of these products, slowly remove them or save up for healthy and safe ones, especially if you didn't know that some of these were harmful! Everyone has to learn it. 2. DO NOT get rid of small bird cages, in fact, you might even want a small, easy to carry one in case you need to visit a vet or you bring your bird outside for a bit! Don't leave them in it too long though! 3. If you're not sure if something is safe for your bird, you probably want to not add it until you make sure it is safe and more research is done! and 4. I'VE NEVER HAD A BIRD. this is just tips I think everyone should know though!

I remember trying a sand perch for our first bird (we didnā€™t know much yet) and he simply refused to use it. We quickly realised it was probably not comfortable for the guy. Props to him for expressing his opinion by outright rejecting the perch.

Tiny cages arenā€™t all bad. Theyā€™re great for days that I want to bring my birds outside for a little bit without the full barriers of the sturdier travel carriers. But of course no bird should be kept in them for very long

When you showed us the image of the bird with crop impaction, there was an image of a man on the side and that man is our Avian vet. How crazy is that?!

It wasnā€™t mentioned in the video, but a lot of places sell rope perches and boings made of sisal, which is a more easily digestible fibre than cotton and could be a good replacement if your bird loves the boings!

I had a parrot before, and unfortunately made a bunch of these mistakes with him. I feel so bad now. Thanks for the informative video!

I try to avoid these videos because they give me so much anxiety I try to spread this information to my parents, but they insist that the toys and perches wouldn't be on the market if they're bad. It upsets me that they don't listen to me and look down on me just because I'm younger :(

This is an outstanding, helpful & insightful video!!! Iā€™m a teacher & have been rescuing birds for thirty years, & learned so many new important tips from you. Many thanks!
  • @Cottage-Reader
This video saves new bird owners so much money! Thank you.
  • Peanuts can be deadly to parrots because of a mold specific to peanuts that you can not see. So often they show no symptoms until itā€™s too late.
  • I knew about most of these but didn't even think about the sand perches causing cuts. Its so frustrating how so many things marketed for animals end up being harmful for them. Thank you for the info!
  • This has been the most educational video I've watched. I'm a new with my 2 budgies and I want them to be safe and healthy. There is too many commercial products out there at pet stores and now I know what is better for them. Thank you.

On the subject of toys: Make sure the clips and chains are safe. No spring clamps like a carabiner clip or keychain clip. Make sure the chains/rings that the toys are hanging on are also closed rings and not rings that are on keychains that twist around these too can also hurt beaks. Bonus tip: an alternative for the grit/calcium supplement - get a cuttlebone. calcium and chew toy all in one. STAY AWAY from the "mineral blocks" though. they have a lot of additives. Controversial Tip: In my experience sanding perches/rope perches are not all bad, but they should not be the ONLY perch you have in your cage. Your bird should have at LEAST 3 different types of perches to choose from of varying widths and shapes. Even natural perches should be used carefully based on the types of dye, sealant, and wood type used. (what I'm saying is just make sure you're getting your perches from a good source and not just going outside and picking up some branches) If you do use a sanding perch, it should be put near the food (Essentially in a place where they will use it, but not sit on it all day. It should be a spot where they sit temporarily) The same goes for rope perches. Overall, always make sure your toys and materials in your bird's cage are always maintained and monitored for defects. Do your research, get many opinions, read published bird books, watch online videos and love the heck out of your little feather friend.
  • I just came across this video. I have been working with birds for 40+ years. I think your video was done extremely well. Very well done researched and done. You are definitely a terrific bird mom.!!
  • My family and Iā€™ve recently been preparing to get a bird, weā€™ve already got a cage, coincidentally the large one you showed a pic of, sorted out and will actually get a lovebird(likely) tomorrow. Iā€™m excited but also nervous about whether I can take care of them as well as they deserve. šŸ˜… This video was incredibly helpful! I will definitely be coming back to this channel for more advice
