I live in Chicago. I’m a fairly recent transplant from Europe. Yes, I’m as white as a daisy. And everyone, and I mean everyone, warned me about chi-raq. In our first week here my husband and I were driving around and ended up in the hood. Gang colors worn, the works. We almost had a car crash there with 2 young ladies in a Jeep suv and the poor girl almost drove straight in to a brick wall after narrowly missing the mail lady, a lamp post and a tree. Instead of fear, I told my husband to pull over and I jumped out of the car and ran as fast as I could to these 2 young ladies to make sure they were okay. Of course there was a ruckus with people wondering what was going on and what not. On my way to the Jeep I asked the mail lady if she was unharmed, and thankfully she was. I carried on to the car and found this poor girl shaking like a leaf. Not for one second did I worry about my safety, I worried about that of the occupants of the Jeep. I just talked to her and her friend until both had calmed down and stopped shaking, asked if they were ok and made general small talk just to calm them down. The guys wearing colors also came over to have a look, asked what had happened, asked if everyone was ok and went on with their day. When I tell this to my white friends they ask why I wasn’t shot, raped, mugged, murdered and other questions along those lines. My answer is simple. I treated everyone like a human being, with respect and worry for their wellbeing. My black, Latino, and Muslim friends never ask those questions. Because I was not a threat I wasn’t treated as one. Yes, Chicago can be a dangerous city, I’ve seen my share of violence even in the “safe” neighborhoods, but it also isn’t the most violent/dangerous place I’ve ever lived.
  • This is very interesting, I never knew the history of Chicago like this

I work with a federal agent who grew up there, and he calls it Chiraq...so bullshit.

These quote on quote boxes of gun left in alleyways don't have to pick up by those in these neighborhoods! there excepted to be pick up by the need to be feared. AFRICAN American men are being studied! What will they do next is something THEY will have to determine.
