10 years ago I bought my first Neat Noise Reduction license for Sony Vegas. Forward on another 7 years, I moved from Vegas to Final Cut Pro. I then reluctantly bought another Neat license. Gulp. It's annoying having to buy digital products- I get it. As creators we prefer to buy the latest flashy drone! But these 'no nonsense' products can give us value in the long run. I have never spoken to the Neat team and am not sharing affiliate links.

With Flicker Free, the situation is slightly different. A few months ago I contacted Digital Anarchy and requested to test the plugin as part of a Youtube video. I have a good relationship with the company- they have not yet slapped me in the face! But Digital Anarchy do not know about the mention in today's video. And I am not leaving affiliate links. As I mention in the video, you can also try filming at 25 fps. Depending where you live and the bulb frequency, that may take away the need for Flicker Free.

Neither Neat or Flicker Free are perfect, no plugins are. They slow rendering down considerably. I only apply them right at the end of my edit. In this video I noticed some slight skin smoothing using Flicker Free, particularly in the parody scene with Matt talking to the camera as a YouTuber. But I also used it to remove flicker from the cathedral in the background on my own vlog shots. And the skin smoothing wasn't too bad. It probably makes me look better, a bit like a black mist filter. I now have a 'teen girl skin' mode. Likewise, Neat can make your shots sometimes look slightly cartoony. But you do have options to fine tune and select different areas.

Overall I would recommend buying Neat Noise Reduction first. If the flicker problem is a noticeable issue for you, pick up Flicker Free too.

Note- Flicker Free can also be very useful for drone hyperlapses or time-lapses when the lighting changes. I used it on my hyperlapse at 0.43 secs on my previous Mini 4 Pro Review in Scotland.

  • The safest way to fly at night is to use waypoints during the day & save the mission for night use as you can tweak it a little if needed.

Great content, thanks for your honest opinion on the new night mode.❤
  • Great video and thanks both for the honest review, and for not mentioning that red team. Have had the Mini 4 since the day after its release and it's a great piece of kit providing you work within its limitations. For me it's a huge step up from my Mini 2.

After having my Mini 4 for a couple of months now, I've got round to trying some Night Time filming using dLog. And I've decided to revisit this episode again to see what I've learned/discovered matches up to last time I saw this episode. I really like filming at night time, however the endeavour really must come with a Health Warning. Last weekend I nearly lost my drone in the Mersey filming the Mersey Gateway bridge and Jubilee bridge. It set the Home Point half way into the river. I thought nothing of this till I got to 10 minutes flight time left in the battery, and thought "Ho Sh1t" get home quick before the inevitable. That all pales into insignificance when the "Obstacle Avoidance" stops working. Last night I was filming the Darleks and Tardis on the prom, during a quite night of the Illuminations. Long story short, the drone found a supporting cable, which I could not see, and now I'm testing out the delivery speed of DJI's Care Refresh.😂😂

Hi Ian. Late to this one but found it really helpful with great advice. Really love your videos too. Still using my trusty Mini 2 so helping me decide on which upgrade 3 pro or 4 pro..
  • I've got myself the mini 4 (thanks for that) and found great delight in the night mode....I am only 7 months in as a drone pilot and have much to learn, but as a lover of vibrancy and dreamlike imagery am really enjoying the results. ❤
