In early of 2001,TVB rival ATV has been bought the Who wants to be millionaire licesne.the programme dominate the HK TV market and most viewer has lots of great reception to the program.
TVB has facing a huge lost of viewer to the channel.
As a result TVB has quickly came up to bought the Weakest Link production licesne from ECM UK (the asia license distributor appoint by BBC Worldwide.)with total of 108 episode.
During the announcement of the show license has been bought, the local Media and newspaper both direct compare the show format as well as the reception in other country as well.
Also TVB has highly hope the Weakest Link can revival the lost of viewers and even win over ATV in this direct competition.
the HK version is the first one that the weakest link with BBC has been the license to Asia country.
As a license require.
the whole premiere week airing has both BBC Worldwide and it's Asia license distributor ECM UK staff monitoring the production and Host Carol Cheng. makesure they following the production bible without any mistak or offset.
In the first week Carol must act like Anne Robinson(The original host in UK)with harsh, mean attitude and no mercy towards contestant.
after the first one has been premiere. The critics of the show was mixed.
Both positive and negative way. Because until the weakest link has been air in HK.no other program was like that way towards contestant. Some viewer criticise the show was too mean and harsh which promote bad habit to viewer and children as well. they also file the complain of the show to the Broadcasting Authority.
Carol was famous with her cheesy , warm and charming personality with quick knowledge and respond as well.

with media analysis both WWTBM AND Weakest Link format. they conclude TVB will be lost in this direct battle.
As the show was air in daily schedule in same prime time timeslot as ATV WWTBM.
After TVB recognize the show rating start to drop,they decide to ditch the mean attitude,instead allow Carol being more humor and cheesy toward contestant.Both contestant and host love to being more banter together was t it also turn out the viewer had been more acceptable and loved the show.
The rating has been increase a lot.at the final of this competetion.the program viewer rating has been Win over WWTBM.
As a result HK is one of the version has been won over WWTBM.(the others is Australia and Dutch version as well)in weakest link history.
