Color Wheel Basics + How To Use The Color Wheel To Improve Your Painting! (Beginner Art Lesson)

Published 2021-06-10
Hi Painting Friends - This video is packed with helpful information for beginner to advanced artists that want to learn more about using color in their paintings. This information builds a foundation for you to continue to improve as an artist. I talk about how color can make or break your painting, explain the basics of the color wheel, and then we take the color wheel and hold it up to actual objects to determine which color we would use if we were painting that object. Enjoy!

If you just want to skip to the part where I fill in the color wheel, go to 7:28.

If you'd like to print out this same color wheel, here is one close to what I used: mrprintables.com/printable-color-wheel.html

Colors used today:
cadmium red
primary yellow
ultramarine blue + phthalo blue

I picked up a paint brush in 2020 to have some kind of "normal & productive" in my life at home. I've wanted to say "Thank you!" for a while to you in particular. Your YT videos and Instagram pictures are great. Much appreciated.

Greetings from California 👋🏻 Thanks for the tutorial 😀 Have a wonderful day. Stay safe 🦋💞🌸👍
  • Mixing colors on your palette is one half of painting. Even if you cannot make your edger create the mountains you wanted, at least the colors are right and clear and beautiful. Great lesson!
  • Thanks for that discussion on cobalt and phthalo and which is the cooler and which is the warmer. I've been back and forth on that and often struggled with which one is really the "perfect" primary. Very insightful! 'Also never gave the color wheel much thought for really using it for the tertiaries and in the practical landscape. Your instructions kind of put other color wheel tutorials to shame ... well, they now seem incomplete 😋Thanks, Stoof! 👍👍
