President Rodrigo Roa Duterte inspected the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ship, Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Adelaide under the command of Captain Jonathan Earley, docked at Pier 15 in Port Area, Manila.

Upon his arrival, the President together with the rest of the reception party toured and assessed the facilities of the ship. Thereafter, Capt. Earley and Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Amanda Louise Gorely presented him a souvenir coin and cap.

In his brief remarks, the President Duterte welcomed the rest of the Australian Navy officials and expressed hope that the Philippines’ alliance with Australia, as well as with the other nations, should be kept, especially with the emergence of nuclear threats.

He also shared a brief update on the country’s fight against terrorism in Marawi City and reminded everybody present to be vigilant to avoid such violence.

“We’re coping up, we hope that it will be finished in a about one week, we have suffered casualties… Just a reminder for everybody to raise its awareness, it’s not bad to be strict in immigration laws and it is really has something to do with the self-reservation of a nation,” he said.

HMAS Adelaide, is the largest ship built for the RAN. It is in Manila to take part in the Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2017, a regional deployment by the Australian Defence Force that aims to promote security and stability in nearby regions in Australia.

Also present were Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and other Australian Embassy and RAN officials.
