  • Thank you Joe for ever continuing the education, understanding & updates of how to select a home solar system & all that's involved. Keep it going, much thanks!
  • Enphase is the best. With the ability to create a microgrid so your panels still generate electricity during a down grid, with or without batteries. THE Holy Grail. Kudos guys.
  • It would be nice if we could actually buy ANY Enphase battery in the UK!

C'mon Joe... If Enphase is updating their software that's a good thing. You said earlier in the video how great the Enphase system is and midway you're talking FUD because they maintain their product and introduce new features. I work in a high tech company and we're proud that we constantly update and improve our products.

Very interested in this video. We have a 15kW all-Enphase system with IQ7+ inverters and two of the "old" Enphase 10T modules. We have been thinking about adding a 3rd 10T battery this coming year, so it's kinda disappointing to hear about possible backwards compatibility issues. I hope the company can resolve those problems (whatever they are) by pushing firmware updates out to older systems. Kinda stupid to alienate your existing customer base by ignoring them when developing new "improved" products.
  • I added 2x IQ Battery 10T to my existing IQ7 system with the IQ System Controller R2. It is working fine in on grid as well as off-grid mode. Only difference is, that if your battery reaches the 2 % shut off level, the IQ7 are unable to wake the battery back up whereas the IQ8 on the roof would be able to charge the battery even if you get to the 2 % level.
  • Now that Enphase has revamped the naming of things and made some further changes could you please do a quick overview of how the New Improved Enphase system works. Just sort of a Macro view of what's going on.

As a homeowner with IQ7 micro inverters in my solar system (installed in 2019) I'm very interested in adding batteries and it is a must that the battery system is compatible with my existing hardware. I was communicating with the contractor who installed my system and he said that here in WI they have had several Enphase battery systems that were not only difficult to get commissioned for some reason but also many that simply aren't working as expected for the owners. He also said that the generator integration causes massive headaches and they've had a very hard time getting it to work at all. As of our last contact he went from recommending Enphase exclusively (I was trying to get him to look at SolArk and Franklin WH) to not recommending batteries at all at this time. Well. The electric utility here (WE Energies) is terribly anti-solar so I'd like to get as independent from their grid as possible. I don't need a shiny case and fancy integrations, although that's nice, I just need a very large battery that will work with my IQ7s both on grid and off grid and that will take a generator input for our weather related lack of charging in the winter.

I just got one of these installed to add to my enphase battery from 1 yr ago, and it cost more than before

Hi, I am just starting to get into alternate home power sources. I was wondering if I could add a 36 V wind turbine generator to a IQ eight power inverter and feed power back to my grid? If not, could I use the wind turbine generator to charge batteries and run 36 V back into the IQ 8 power inverter? Thanks
  • @ddyoder
I got the iQ8+ microinverters for my solar panels, if I do pursue batteries in the coming few years I certainly hope my choice of iq8 vs iq7 series will pay off with more capabilities and options to upgrade via software than had I got the 7 series microinverters for my roof panels
  • Great video Joe showing off the differences. I have to think that in the next version (Gen 3), they will need to abandon the idea of using IQ8 microinverters within the battery assembly. Although a neat idea to get faster to market, it isn't a good solution for cost or packaging - due to the weight and size of them, as well as all the interconnects. Neat from a modular standpoint, but not the best engineered solution - nor great on surge power. And the redundancy aspect of the power conversion doesn't help if battery cells themselves becomes an issue. Anyway, just a guess about Gen 3, but it seems like they need to better integrate things moving forward to stay competitive.
  • The 3/3T and 10/10T is the second generation per Enphase. The 5P is the 3rd generation. The first generation was the Enphase AC Battery. I don't think the 'T' designation is what signifies second generation.
  • I can't speak for the stability of the firmware but the update you are talking about is to "switch on" ensemble mode as its off by default
  • @cselig
Do you know if the new systems still have the same 40 kWh "total system" limitation? That seems like a bit of a bummer if a few years down the road you wanted an even bigger setup to go fully off grid.
  • @trentonr7072
I have been waiting so far almost four months since I order my Franklin batteries. Maybe I should have ordered Enphase since that was an option with my solar company.
  • Do you happen to know how well this plays with a span electric panel? Bids I'm getting are 400w panels with iq8+ micro inverters. Would there be clipping with that setup? Also, could I use those with a span panel and utilize the direct sunlight backup feature and then add a battery layer without waste / reworking the system?
  • within 4 months of installation. 1 of the 6 Incharge 10 batteries failed with a BMU fault. Enphase shipped me another to replace it.
