Meet Asclepias tuberosa, the 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year!

Published 2017-07-10
What a beautiful plant for a hot sunny sight, AND not only is it a nectar plant for bees and butterflies, it is what is called a larval food plant for the monarch butterfly! This means the monarch can drink nectar from the flowers, then lay eggs on it's leaves and buds. The baby caterpillar hatches from the egg and begins eating the plant. Monarch caterpillars can only eat Asclepias plants, so if you want more monarchs AND a beautiful perennial, reseeding plant, try this one!

One of my faves as well. Those bright orange flowers!

I have a patch of these too. Thanks for the video. I also shoot some videos of my garden as well. I have a native pollinator garden (with some cultivars) for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds in my back yard.

Beautiful! Can I ask what are those other flowers you have planted around your milkweed? I’m planting some milkweed too in my yard and trying to figure out what other flowers compliment it and I like how your setup looks.💕
