GRUFF is a handmade, paper short film I've been designing, building, puppeteering, and editing across almost three years. It's a story about the people you know love you, but aren’t exactly verbal about it. It’s how I've processed my dad’s passing, and learned how to love people who don't love exactly like me.

I believe we all have individuals in our lives, related or not, that pride themselves as the "strong silent types". Through this short film, I hope all of us can learn to empathize, connect, and more deeply love the those who have so much more to say than we think, and just need us to listen.

I hope you enjoy "GRUFF".

The fact that he was always staring at his daughter's accomplishments. He always sat there to marvel at her, he was truly a proud father.

That shot where when she sits down in his chair and it reveals the view he had all those years, which was all her achievements he was so proud of, i nearly cried.

I can't believe that YouTube Shorts actually brought me to something worthwhile, but here I am. 35 years old and crying at a paper craft movie. Incredible. Just. Incredible. Thank you.
  • I loved the moment when you saw the wall filled with his daughter's accomplishments and realised he was saying it all without words
  • We can NEVER forget this man who allowed us to enjoy this serious paper movie for FREE

When the fade away of her smiling to her after the funeral and sat down in his chair and the little girl walked in it was so much that it had me laying in my bed crying for about 30 min
  • My grandfather was born in the 50s and 60s around the time where children were supposed to be seen and not heard he came from a very abusive household so he's always kept to himself and has always been quiet.. even at my graduation he didn't come up and tell me congratulations so I took it personally... And just like the old man he always sit in his chair and watch TV he never really talked to anyone... In a way this brought me so much comfort and for that I thank you.....❤

I don't really ever cry—I can count on one hand the number of times I've cried in my adult life. This made me cry. Throughout this I was thinking of my dad. He's worked hard in his life, and it's started to take its toll over the last decade. I'm confident he has at least a few decades left, but when you live far from your family and the weeks just seem to fly by, it feels like you're missing out on opportunities to share in doing the things they love while they are still able to do them. With specific regard to "Gruff:" the minimal dialog leaves so much room for the very loud yet inaudible communication between characters. This work of art does such a great job giving the audience something familiar and fundamental to connect to. (Author's note: I had to retype this on a computer because my phone killed youtube as it entered "sleep mode" to better prepare me for bed. I felt that original post was perfect, so I nearly cried again when I realized I had to start over.)

You know why its so good? Because one man decided to put in work and effort that a big studio could never do. When you’re personally invested into something like this, you give it your all. And it shows, well done.

The cinematic storytelling is so incredible; the way her entire life she's been sitting facing the armchair, seeing nothing but the quiet nod. But when she actually sat in the armchair, seeing things from her father's perspective, she saw all the appreciation he's been harbouring all those years.

I started slowly tearing up when she said "but the silence caught up to them..."

My grandpa was the strong, silent type and I never realized how much him and my grandma loved me until they both passed over the last two years. This made me sob, thank you for something so beautiful.

I stumbeled across this Film right after my Dad passed away tree days ago. Until now, i was unable to cry, everything was so...burried inside me. Your Film helped me so much, i cant even say. Just keep up the work. Thank You!
  • @PodConcepts
the fact that this dude spent 3 years straight to make a 9 minute animation on his own really shows how dedicated he is. amazing
  • I really love how in the reveal of the true perspective of that chair. its not facing the tv. its facing the wall of all her accomplishments. but the thing i REALLY love is that the things front and center have nothing to do with her career as a spy but instead focus on her accomplishments growing up. the ones he got to share with her personally. the marshal art competitions her at dance practice. her graduation pictures of her in his lap. those are dead center on the wall.
  • This absolutely has to go on the big screen at every animation festival in the world so we can appreciate the texture in its full glory (and so it can get all the awards).
