    imagine if there was a ghast next to the portel when you guys entered the nether and then the ghast would hit the portel and you'd leave your flint and steel in your locker then you'd be trapped in the nether with the oni.

    If you get 32 obsidian then you go to the nether and then you can make another nether portal and go through and into the portal and you are in a different place in your dimensions!

    That was a nether portal , in the nether, 1 block is 8 , so 1/8*32=8 So every block in the nether you travel is 8 in the overworld
