S13 E13: How to *Actually* Make Money from a Small Farm

Published 2023-10-24
It's every homesteader's dream to quit their job and become completely self-sufficient selling eggs & soap from their homestead.

The bad news? It's almost impossible to make a full-time income from selling eggs & soap.
The good news? It's entirely possible to make real money from your small farm-- you just need a strategy.

In this episode, I'm joined by farmer and business coach Michael Kilpatrick to bust through the common misconceptions around making money from a farm so you can make actual money instead!

I will totally pay $6/dozen for good backyard eggs. And they don't have to be on any special feed. Just fresh air, sunlight and access to bugs. If i could have hens, i would. But i just can't right now. Eggs are so nutritious. I'd rather support someone who cares.
  • I think the bottom line here is that you’re not going to quit your job and make money overnight. Its trial and error, and more likely you’re going to have to try a few things, see what sticks and then hustle to grow it while also keeping your town job or supplemental income. Then once you know your endeavors are taking hold, you can trust that putting 100% of your focus into your business will be profitable enough to quit other jobs.
  • Greetings, from Mr Axel Vasa the west coast wizard himself. I have got something essential to share with you. Let's keep spreading much love and positive light to the world. GOD bless y'all. 💯❤️🙏

I listened to this podcast when it first came out and didn't care for the info because it definitely did not pertain to the direction i envision my sales to go. But this started playing after todays podcast and for some reason i let it play again and thought even though his end game is not at all mine, i probably could still pull information from it to help me and my very low scale ideas of sales i am interested in. And i am glad i did! I did pick up great ideas that inspire me to try this year and just see where it takes me. Thanks for this content Jill!

Wow, I just realized that I have records of who bought what, when, and how much, but I haven't been keeping track of their contact info! That's about to change...

I wanted to tell you that I am about 40 pages into your book and literally every page I say out loud, “she took the words straight outta my brain!!!” My husband and I bought 20 acres in rural Kansas about 8 years ago, not knowing what we needed it for, but knew we did. We finally built a house last year after he dug out 500 cedar trees little by little and with the help of a gracious farmer down the road with tractors and time to spare to help out two young dreamers ready to make a go at this in some fashion. Oh, and I wanted to tell you- I was making homemade yogurt a decade ago with raw milk I met my friend to get every week 😊 so you arent alone in your craziness!! 😂

Good interview. Really hits home with the reality of running a small business and trying to do it from a homestead. Well Done !!

When we become corporate in nature, the entire movement of real foods will be lost. We can't strive to become the very industry we despise and expect different results.

When I make my millions day trading, I’m going to buy a small house on a big land and hire people to grow food and take care of animals. I want to eat as healthy as possible and know where my food is coming from.

I'm sorry to be negative, but this man is everything that I don't want from old-fashioned on purpose. Kudos to you on going though the whole spiel.... I can't
