From the archives: Nelson Mandela speaks with Dan Rather ahead of South Africa's 1st free elections

On April 26, 1994, South Africa held the first multiracial elections in its history following the end of apartheid. The African National Congress, led by Nelson Mandela, swept the contests and elected Mandela president. "We will always seek consensus to resolve our problems, and that is going to be a change,” Mandela told CBS News' Dan Rather in an interview before polls opened.
