Still Truckin’ After All These Years

Published 2024-02-07
Since their infamous backpacking adventure in 1973, Rick Steves and Gene Openshaw have been partners in numerous endeavors. Join Rick and Gene as they give the inside scoop on 50 years of Rick Steves' Europe. They trace the long and winding road from their days on the Hippie Trail, to the early Rick Steves bus tours, from self-published books (including Gene's latest, Michelangelo at Midlife) to nationwide TV to their own quixotic side projects. Along the way, we'll see how travel changed their lives forever, and how the adventurous Back Door spirit continues to live on today. #ricksteves #mondaynighttravel

I was in China for 5 weeks recently and saw it through the backdoor like a local with my life companion who is from China. It was the best experience and the Chinese people are so welcoming and generous. I still recall the instance when our We Chat app was having a hard time connecting to be able to pay a vendor for some bottled water and a young man stepped up to pay for us. He did not even want to be reimbursed. The sights and scenes of China from Chongqing, through Chengdu, Sechuan and Yunnan province were wonderful. And the food experience was out of this world.
