You can be empathetic & it will be seen as an opportunity to take advantage because the friendship is based on convenience, trauma & a distraction, not shared interests or you being kind to them. Being friends with someone because of their sad background usually doesn't end the way you expect. I had a coworker, try to befriend me I guess she felt sorry for me and no I'm not suicidal. But I peeped it. She was overly friendly and and I later found out why. I don't need nobody around me if they have weird intentions for being around me. I have nothing to be downtrodden about so why feel sorry for me. I guess cause I'm quiet and shy at work I guess people feel sorry about that which is weird
