After a group of aliens grant ordinary substitute teacher Ralph Hinckley a red and black suit that gives him extraordinary superpowers, he discovers he has a problem. He lost the instruction manual. Ralph teams up with perpetually annoyed FBI agent Bill Maxwell, and together they take on the bad guys as best they can.

The Greatest American Hero was a superhero comedy series that ran for three seasons from 1981 to 1983. It starred William Katt as earnest substitute teacher turned bungling superhero Ralph Hinkley, the ever-amazing Robert Culp as his FBI handler Special Agent Bill Maxwell, and Conny Sellecca as Ralph’s lawyer Pam Davidson.

Ralph’s suit grants him a wide range of powers, including flight, super strength, invulnerability, telekinesis, and x-ray vision. However, without the instruction manual, he only discovers these abilities through trial and error, and often has little control over them. One running gag in the show plays off the fact that though the suit grants him the ability to fly, it does not endow him with any skill at landing. Ralph often crashes to earth in comedic heap after soaring great distances.

The Greatest American Hero was created by legendary writer and television producer Stephen J. Cannell with his frequent creative partner Frank Lupo serving as one of the show’s producers. It was the second show produced under the banner of Stephen J. Cannell Productions, and the first to bare the company’s now iconic logo.

The show’s theme song was extremely popular during the shows run and has etched its own mark on popular culture since. “Believe It or Not” was composed by Mike Post with lyrics by Stephen Geyer. It was sung by Joey Scarbury. The song debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 2 on the charts.
