Hamas: How Israel created its own nemesis w/Paola Caridi | The Chris Hedges Report

Published 2024-03-29
Hamas, like all resistance groups, from the African National Congress to The Irish Republic Army, are as demonized as they are misunderstood. Hamas is a religious, nationalist political movement. It is not, despite what Israel and Washington say, a terrorist organization—although, like most resistance groups (including the Jewish militias that created the state of Israel), it has used terrorism as a tactic. Because those on the outside do not understand what went into making Hamas—the steady drip of humiliation, violence, and impoverishment that define Israel’s Occupation of the Palestinians—Hamas and its ideology appears incomprehensible. But from the Palestinian perspective, Israel has left the Palestinians with no other choice. Journalist and historian Paola Caridi, author of "Hamas: From Resistance to Regime," joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the roots and nature of Hamas, and what we miss when we unthinkingly cast Hamas as nothing more than a terrorist organization.

I was in the Army, infantry in the U.S. war against the people of Viet Nam. Many years later I learned that the Vietnamese people had been resisting occupations by many countries for hundreds of years. Imperial powers are led by people who are “certain” that they can take over another peoples and then everything will be fine. Resistance is key to the survival of humanity. NEVER STOP RESISTING!
  • The question is why every upload about Gaza Palestine is always banned......is Israel afraid that the whole world will know about Israel's atrocities against the people of Gaza...

People living under colonialist occupation have the right to resist BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. ANY MEANS!

I like when she didn’t describe the attack on the mosque in Hebron as “terrorist” but she said about Hamas attacks many time as “terrorist” and “fascist”… that’s why we will never have equality and peace in the world ! Let’s remember that the first terrors bombing in Palestine was in 1946 when the “ Israeli terrorist militia “ haganah attacked king David hotel and killed 96 people and this was never classified as “terrorist” , the Jewish colonialists of terrorist made hundreds of terror attacked on Palestinians and till today it’s happening

Fighting for justice, equality and freedom is not terrorism at all As long as there is oppression, occupation, and inequality, there must be resistance. And If you fight for freedom in your own land, you are a freedom fighter #freepalestine🇵
  • "The Zionists as a movement, and then the State of Israel, which emerged from that movement, declared war on the Palestinian people. In that war we saw ethnic cleansing, genocidal policies and a racist apartheid regime" ~ Miko Peled.
  • Irish here..grew up in the 80s watching bombs go off and people being reported shot on my tv every week. I was very young...I never supported innocent people being killed and grew up thinking that the IRA were bad actually. In my adulthood I learned about armed resistance and post- colonialism and what the IRA were fighting for, because you're not taught it in school. It is possible to support the right of a people to armed resistance, whilst not supporting some of their tactics and methods. From what I can see from watching the Al Qassam brigades vids and various military analytic commentary is that Hamas has been executing a much more respectable account of themselves, in respect to their conduct during this conflict, than the Israeli's.

Thank you again, Chris Hedges, for having having Paole Caridi with her book, "Hamas," on with this discussion this morning.
  • You're the ONLY news organization that truly discussed the history of Ham@$. Thank you so much foe that's

As an Irish Catholic growing up in N. Ireland during the “troubles”, the Palestinian people have been treated so much worse. I was scared of IRA and horrified every time they killed or bombed innocents. I don’t know much about Hamas just that they were funded by Israel a few years ago.

"I support Palestinians but not Hamas." Then you stand for nothing. If you support a people being threatened with extinction then you must support their armed resistance because that is their only hope for survival. Unless you do this you only "support" Palestinians in dying. The notion Palestinians can commit “atrocities” against their occupiers is a gross lie. The only atrocity is the ongoing Nakba - Israel’s dependence on Palestinian elimination. Every act in response is necessarily liberatory. Any law that condemns liberation has no legitimacy.

It is so important to have a clear understanding of the history leading to Oct 7th and the horrific, excessive assault on Gaza. Every resistance is labelled "terrorists " until such a time that it suits Western powers to legitimise them in pursuit of their own agenda's. I'm sure that I don't need to provide a list of examples to the viewers of this channel. Great interview, fascinating, educational, and insightful.
