Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you were ever disappointed as a kid by a toy you saw on a cool commercial that didn’t live up to its hype you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia Make sure to, subscribe below right now. and click the bell so you always know when our latest and greatest shows come out. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.

It’s time for another edition of our show #1 in our Hearts where we go in-depth on a song that should’ve been a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 but for reasons it came up short… ya know It's hard to fathom how different my life would be without being able to hear the gift of music. What's truly remarkable is that there are several renowned musicians who are deaf. Perhaps the most famous example is Ludwig van Beethoven, who began losing his hearing at 26 and was completely deaf by his mid-40s. But there are others—like Sean Forbes and Evelyn Glennie—who either lost their hearing early in life or were born deaf, yet have managed to create incredible music against astronomical odds.

Now, consider the challenge of not being able to see the world around you. How would you even begin to describe something... you can't see? How would you express what you can’t see in the lyrics of a song? Throughout the history of recorded music, there have been extraordinary musicians who achieved remarkable feats, possessing an innate ability to feel and express music without the sense of sight. Luminaries such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Blind Willie Johnson, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Feliciano, Ronnie Milsap, and Doc Watson.

Among a list of blind musicians who were not as well known as those I just mentioned, include a rather obscure artist from Massachusetts named Paul Pena, whose claim to fame was being the songwriter for “Jet Airliner,” that Steve Miller adapted and shaped into one of classic rock’s greatest hits: Most people have no idea that Jet Airliner is a cover since it’s so indelibly tied to Steve Miller, his style, his passion, his signature. but Paul has an incredible story. Paul's journey was marked by adversity from the start. Nearly blind from birth and grappling with illnesses throughout his life, he found solace and purpose in music. Despite his visual impairment, Paul possessed an innate musical talent...

Poll: What is your pick for the COOLEST MUSICAL Opening from a song EVER?

Steve Miller is my hero for telling the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame to go screw itself.
  • Adam, I was out on my daily walk with my dog around sunset in my neighborhood. One of the houses that has a gigantic TV was on and the curtains were not yet closed for the night. I looked up and saw YOU on the TV. It made me feel good to know people in my neighborhood are learning about your channel.
  • Don’t forget Jeff Healey, he was a blind guitarist from the 80’s.
  • @CurtisBoyle
A blind artist that I would love you to cover is Jeff Healey - a blind Canadian guitarist who came up with a unique way of playing the guitar, and played some other instruments as well. A very well renowned singer, guitarist and songwriter who sadly passed away from cancer... which is also what took his eyesight when he was a toddler.

I remember Steve and Boz Scaggs playing at our fraternity parties in Dallas 1967

I am also blind from birth and have a real passion for music. When I was young, I developed perfect pitch and I can't help but hear that a song is in a certain key, with every single song I hear.
  • I've never heard of Paul Pena before, and I imagine there are many like me! I hope this brings him great notoriety and introduces many others to his music! This is why the Professor is so great! He gives us facts about our favorite songs that we might never have known!
  • I always forget that Ronnie Milsap was blind. Crazy how many great artists were blind and it reminds me that my own neuropathy can be overcome. I never knew that Jet Airliner was a cover. What a great story. I was in grade school in the 70s and always liked the Steve Miller Band.
  • @SailorCallie
I never knew it was a cover until to you mentioned it. Thanks for putting Paul Pena in the spotlight. May he #RIP.

When I went to see Iron Butterfly with my husband on our first anniversary there was a band playing on stage to open for them. They were being treated like a jukebox! The lights weren't lowered, people were talking and walking around... It was very disrespectful. My husband and I went up to talk to them at the end of their set and we told them we loved their music and to ignore the cretins who didn't recognize their genius. Keep doing what you are doing!! They were The Steve Miller Band!! 💖💋💖💋😆😆😆🎉🌵👵🐺🖖

"Book of Dreams" is one of rock's seminal albums. Learning the "Jet Airliner" backstory makes it even more of a masterpiece.
  • i was lucky enough to meet Paul Pena briefly in 1999 in Sydney. I have no idea why he was in town. He came into the discount CD shop where I was working, quite close to the Sydney Hilton. We talked; I had no idea he was visually impaired. Somewhere along the line he showed me a copy of Ghengis Blues and mentioned Jet Airliner. I was a more than a little awed. I'm sure I speak for many who have worked in grind-level retail - There are customers you immediately forget, or hope to. And there are folks who make your day. He had a good glow about him.

I loved Steve Miller songs when I was a kid. So many sing along Rock and Roll songs like Jet Airliner. I thought this was a Steve Miller original. I learn new things every day.
  • Paul Pena is a musician worth remembering and praising. Steve Miller did a fantastic job with this song and kudos to him for helping Paul while crafting a #1 hit ( in my heart, anyway). And I appreciate your correct pronunciation of Paul’s last name!
  • @sharonmattox
I have never heard of Paul Pena or his story before, thank you for this! I love Jet Airliner, didn't know that it wasn't Steve Miller's!

The Summer of 1977… I and many of my friends had just graduated from high school in our home town of Kearney, Nebraska. I had just returned from a few weeks in Kansas City, and found three of my best friends at DX Pitts. In Nebraska, the closest thing we had to a beach, was a clear water lake known as a “sand pit” with white silica sand in and around the lake. A lot of people, mostly our age, were enjoying the summer sun at the pits, and I found Charlie, Drew, and Kent sitting on a blanket near a pony keg on ice… Charlie had two of his home stereo speakers on the roof of his car connected to his car’s stereo tape deck, which was playing “Book of Dreams”. He turned it up loud just in time for “Big Ol Jet Airliner” to kick on with that base drum and opening guitar riff… Everyone at the beach was bouncing together along with the beat! I remember Drew grinning, “Just look at that!” One of the fondest and most vivid memories of my youth. …And yeah, I got a photo of the guys! As it turned out, both Drew and Randy both met the girls that day whom would later become their wives! Drew died a year or two later in a motorcycle accident, not long after the birth of his daughter. Kent passed away about seven years ago, while still living and working at Kearney. Charlie is still kicking down in Florida, although his wife, which he met that day at the beach passed away due to cancer about five years ago. Me? I just keep on keepen on... I’m so glad I have that memory, and the photo from that day. Every time I hear “Jet Airliner” it’s like a time machine which takes me back to that time and place…
  • Adam, my Brother, today you not only executed your normal feat of transporting us all back to a cooler musical time period through use of a great old song, you also managed to educate a large number of us in a way we did not even suspect that we were ignorant. As others here have said, I am a Classic Rock, Blues and Classic R & B lover and yet had no idea about the contributions of the gentleman spotlighted here. I am so grateful to you, sir. Keep up your efforts. At this point, you're doing the Lord's work.
